SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs C. B. King (Sealey street) have returned from Christchurch. Miss 11. Tripp (Wai-iti road) is visiting Christehureh.i Mr and Mrs S. W'allis (Timaru) have returned from Napier. Mrs Massey, who was the guest of Mrs G. Hart, has returned to Christchurch. Miss Denniston, who was the guest of Mrs J. VALEDICTORY. On Monday afternoon, in the Mayor's reception-room, at the City Council Chambers, a very . pleasant function was held to honour Sister Grace, the. popular and capable secretary of the Coal and Blanket Fund Committee,, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Those present included:—Mesdames Archer, Bellamy, Biloliffe, Biuset, Blackaby. Green, Foster, Johnston, Neville, Sturge, and Williams, Misses Cardale, Gainsford, and Washbourne, Ensign Newton, Sisters Grace and Agnes. Revs. F. Rule and P. Revell, and Messrs Bannehr and Seville. Apologies were received from Sister Mabel and the Rev. J. K. Archer. Mrs Archer kindly entertained the company at afternoon tea. In the absence of the Mayor, who was unfortunately out of town, the Rev. F. Rule occupied the chair. He expressed the pleasure of the members of the Mayor's Coal and Blanket Fund Committee in meeting together to wish Sister Grace every happiness in her married life, and on ■■ behalf of the committee, he thanked her for the able and thorough manner in which she aad carried out her duties as secretary and in their name, he presented her with a beautiful tortoise-shell toilet set. Mesdames Archer and Williams, Miss Cardale. Rev. P. Revell, and Mr Neville also spoke in eulogistic terms of Sister Grace's worth as a secretary and. a social worker, and wished her much joy in her new sphere.

Sister Grace m replying, thanked the members of the committee for their kindness m entertaining her and for the handsome present they had rnven her. She specially thanked the R*v. T' A", /? d Mr Neville for their kind helpfulness to her. Sister Grace said she had enjoyed the work ven> much during the whole time, nearlv nine years, she had been secretarv of the committee She was looking'forward to still being a member of the committee and-thus helping in the socia] work of the City.

A PLEASANT GATHERING. At the Caledonian Hall', yesterday afternoon, Miss Low and her pupils entertained a large gathering of parents and friends, who greatly enjoyed the exhibition of work done by the various classes during the year. The programme, delightfully .varied, consisted of dumb-bell exercises, bar work; marching, Scotch steps, sprightly hornpipes, dignified minuets and gavottes, picturesque . scarf dances, quaint old English country dances, and nil kinds of modern ballroom dancing. : The pupila. over sixty in muniber, ranging from tiny girls and boy& of five or six to Fifth Form girls from "Rangi-ruru," were wonderfully trained. Their promptitude and the precision, of their actions were, splendid, and the grace of every movement. of their lissome bodies showed that their training was having the desired effect. The work was characterised throughout with naturalness and freedom from self-consciousness that were particularly refreshing in their days-of youthful precocity. BIRTHDAY PARTY AT SOUTH- ! BRIDGE. On Saturday-evening, at their residence, "Attonbrook," Sbuthbridge, Mr and Mrs W. Lochhead entertained several of their friends at one of the most delightful private dances held in the Ellesmere district for a considerable time.' The occasion'"was to celebrate the twenty-first birthdays of their twin son and daughter, Mr Robin and Miss Lynley Lochhead. Friends from all parts of the district assembled, and all those present spent a most enjoyable evening. In the drawing-room those who did not wish to dance played. At supper-time, the guests adjourned to lie dining-room, where supper was. served.. A beautiful two-tier ; cake, decorated with 21 candles, was out by' Miss Lochhead. On behalf of those present, Mr John Cunningham thanked the host and hostess and complimented Mr and Miss Lochhead on their coming of age. "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" was heartily sung, and "Auld Lang Syne" brought a very pleasant and memorable evening to a close. A party of girls from the famous Harrod's Stores in London has been in the United States, having toured 10,000 miles in order to pick np ideas' of America's business methods, an' 7 , they returned content. WEDDINGS. NOLAN—NEE. At'St! Mary's Cnurch, Manchester street, recently Alice Mary Nee, second daughter of Mrs H. McGirr, of St. Albans, - formerly of Cairnbrae, vwas married to James Tone, younger son of Mrs A; J.; Nolan, of Dunedin.-The officiating priest was the Rev. Father J. O'Connell, who also celebrated Nuptial Mass after the ceremony. The bride, who entered the church with" her brother,. Mr Richard Nee, wore a beautiful gown of ivory satin, cut in early Victorian mode; with frills of deep hand-made lace studded' witfr rhinestones. Her head-dress was'of rare Flemish lace, caught it either side ?:with clusters of orange blossom, from which fell the veil, which formed a train, and was carried ■by little Moya and, Ron McKendrj*. the former wearing a frock of deep lemon acebf-deon-pleated georgette with inlef panels of cream net finished with rosebuds, and a cap of finely-pleated cream net with a circlet of rosebuds. " Her little escort wore a black velvet suit in Lord ( Fauntleroy style. The -bride'sposy was of cream rosebuds, lily of the valley, fresias, arid maidenhair ferri. The bridesmaid, Miss Rita Nee,'sister of the bride, wore a charming frock of honey-coloured taffeta trimmed with pale pink and deep-tinted salmon hand-made taffeta flowers and a black crinoline hat trimmed with a cluster of honey and lemon flowers. She carried a pink posy toning with-the ensemble. The best man was Mr Edmond Nolan, of Wellington, brother of the bridegroom. After the ceremony, the wedding, reception was held at Dixieland, the guests being received by the parents of the bride and bridegroom. McGirr wore a frock of black satin with touches of pale pink georgette and black lace/and-Mrs Nolan black accor-deon-pleated georgette. Mrs McGirr carried a posy of pink and mauve pansies, violets, and maidenhair fern, and Mrs Nolan one of mauve and violet sw?-4 fsas. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a heavy gold bangle set with amethysts and an amethyst ring, and the bride's present to the bridegroom a gold wrist watch. /SVhen Mr and' Mrs Nolan left for their, wedding tour, the latter was wearing of navv blue heavy; French crepe de chine with a veetee of < red finished with black buttons and a'i nat to tone. • ' • : • • . •■ - ■ |

BALL AT OMIHI. A-successful plain and fancy dress . ball was held in the Omihi Hall under the auspices of the Omihi Amateur Athletic Sports Club. The attendance was not quite as large as other years owing to the boisterous weather. The-grand march was led. by Mrs Croft and Mr H. Stackhouse. The mcky spot waltzes were won by Miss E. Brien and Mr D. Croft and Miss H.' Alexander and Mr H. Croft respectively.
