Under cover of the Chinese warship Wenchu, the first and second divisions of Yangsen's army entered Shansi, capturing the city with little resistance. They were enthusiastically welcomed by the inhabitants. Taking advantage of the turmoil, bandits looted a section of the city. The British warship Cricket and a British steamer were heavily fired on from the banks of the Kiukiang. The Cricket returned the fire, dispersing the Chinese troops, who left a number of dead and wounded.
