LIFE-SAVING.
SOCIETY'S ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the- Council of the JRoysl Liftf-Saving Society states that the outstanding feature of the last bathing-season was - the" number of drowning accidents at places where no life-savins work was done, and the almost. total absence of fatal accidents in districts where life-saving is carried oat. The outstanding feature of the work of the ■various'' head centres- is the excellent work of the Wanganui Head Centre, which put through 628 awards, including two diplomas, thereby winning the Wigram Shield. The Council hopes that before long the Education Department will show its appreciation . of the work of the Society by endorsing the' certificates of the teachers who- gain the teachers' or bon. instructors' certificates.- A sub-branch has been formed at Palmerston North, and.has, already issned 99 awards. In order-to, encourage, life-saving, work.' in the primary' schools, the Council . proposes to issue a preparatory, cextijlcate.,- to ..primary school children for a test in breaststroke and backstroke swimming, and diving. Although the Council received an increased grant of £IOO from the Government, the work.,had been hindered,through want.of funds.': .:...•
