The engagement is 'announced of Jessie Adeline, youngest daughter of Mrs E. Moore, Dallington, Christchurch, to William Clifford, youngest son ■of Mr and Mrs G. M. Rashbrook, of Colchester, England. The annual dance of the Canterbury Football Association will be held! at the Caledonian Hall on Wednesday evening. Marston's Band will provide music.

Miss Baughan, who is very well known as .a prison visitor and corresponding secretary of the Howard League of Penal Reform, -will speak to the members and friends of the Mothers' Thought Guild at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Theosophical Hall, 267 Cambridge terrace. Her subject will be "Neglect of the Feeble-Minded." Refreshments will be served. To augment the funds of the Church of the Epiphany, Gebbie's Valley, a special effort was made by a committee of ladies last week and resulted in a most .successful and enjoyable "bring and buy" garden partv being held in the grounds of Mr T. 0. Withell. Visitors were present from Kaituna. Tad-, dington. find Governor's Bay. and cave the various stall-holders quite a busy time. Quoßs, putting, .skipping, r.nd stepping competitions were well patronised ami resulted in the committee being able to hand ever to the eh'-rchwardens the sum of £'l7 :?s 6d. On Friday evening Miss Thelma Rowo, at her home in Ferrv road, was hostess at a very enjoyable "bathroom" evening given in honour of Miss Mabel Keen, whoso marriage to Mr TVm Brown takes place early this month. OBITUARY. MRS H. A. SIMPSON. /( One of Canterbury's early settlers passed away on October 28th in the person of Mrs Harriett Ann Simpson, who was in her seventy-sixth year. The deceased lady was born in Oxfordshire, England, and came to New Zealand at the'age of seven years with her parents, the , {ate Mr and l Mrs Thomas Tallott, who settled at Oust about the year 1860. After her marriage to the lato W. H. Simpson, she made her home at Oxford-, where she resided until after the death of her husband 25 years ago. Mrs Simpson, . who was' highly esteemed by a large number of friends, leaves-a family of two son.s, --W. JA. and C. E. Simpson, and five daughters, Mrs J. T. lies, Mrs. John Mal!ett,'Mrs !.. Holmes, Mrs C. Hawes, and' Mrs. J. Oronin. She also leaves 21 grandchildren and 11 great-gr-and-childrei..

The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, the interment being at the Limvood Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev. H. S. Leach. Floral tributes were received from the following:—The family, Mr and Mrs Slade, Mr and Mrs lies, the Barter family, Mr and Mrs Cox, Alva, Mr and Mrs Cronin and Lucy, Mrs Lane, Mr and Mrs Mullins, Mr and Mrs Mallett, Mr and Mrs T. MISS NORA MACLEODSMITH, Very sincere regret-was expressed by a large circle of friends on learning of the death of Miss Nora Muriel Macleodsmith, who passed away, after a short iLlness, at her residence, 37 Cashel street, last Saturday evening. Miss Nora Macleodsmith was the- second daughter of the late Mr J. T. Macleodsmith, a well-known Christchurch musician. She was a music teacher, and in 1924 went to England*where she furthered her studies at theltoyal College of Music, London. For over five years sho was pianist to tho Christchurch Musical Society, then under the conductorship of I>r. Bradshaw; she acted in a similar capacity to the Orpheus Society. She possessed greair powers of leadership and for over twelve years, starting while quite a young woman, she was organist and choirmistress of, St. Mary's, Addington. Her term of office at St. Mary's was a very happy one and only was ended, a short time ago, owing to Miss- Macleodsmith being compelled to resign consequent on the demands made upon her by her strenuous musical life. She was a member of the Christchurch Professional Musicians' Society, and also of the Organists' and Choirmasters' Association.

The esteem in which Miss Macleodsmith was held and the widespread sorrow at her death was shown by the large number'of beautiful wreath's received.

BIRTHDAY PARTY. j

A delightful party was given by Mr and Mrs W. J. It. Stephens, at their residence in Francis street recently, in honour of the thirteenth birthday of their only daughter, Phyllis, who was the recipient of many beautiful presents, amoug which was a Nigerian workbasket, given by the Girl-Guides. The afternoon passed quickly with games, tracking, and a paper-chase, and when a delicious tea had been served, a camp fire was lit, and then the surrounding pines echoed with songs. The party concluded with cheers for Mr and Mrs Stevens and Phyllis. The guests included:—Mr and Mrs vSlade, Mrs Southon, Misses Kathleen Moore. K. Weld. Naomi Bowden, Marjorie and Nellie Bucktin, Sheila Lambie, Betty Pankhurst, J'osie Liggins. Xoreen Young. Kathleen Smythe, Muriel and June Ullrich. Jean Curry, Olwyn Jones, Rene Hays, Edna Lamb, Rhona Lamb, Nancy Rowlands, Freda, Clarice, and Katie Southon, Eveline Wylie, Joan Palmer, Connie Donaldson, Dorothy Mortiboy, Linda Slade, Hilda and Edith Jacob, May Stevenson, Isobel Macgregor.
