Mr Julian B. Foster, Trade Commissioner for the United States, left, for Wellington last evening. He will return to Christchurch on Mondlay. Mr G; M. Hall, acting-president of the Canterbury Progress League, who was injured on Saturday by falling from a tree whiah he was lopping, is at present in .LeVisham Hospital.

The Taranaki Rugby Union decided last nigiit to nominate Mr James McLeod, chairman of the Union, for the managership of the All Blacks on the South African tour—Pkess Association. Mr G. J. Little, who has filled the post of Private Secretary to his Excellency, the Governor-General for the past three years, left bv.the Marama on his return to England. Messrs J. p e trie (Geraldine), John Fraser (Dunedin). John Allan (Dnneflni').. Alfred Purchas (Dunedin). and J. B. Robertson (Dunedin) are at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr G. L. Petersen, advance manager for Wirrh's new circus, arrived at Wellington yesterday from Melbourne by the Manuka, to make arrangements for a tour of New Zealand, starting at Bluff in three weeks.

Mr M. W. Cummings has resignedfrom the post of assistant-supervisor of the Parcels Branch of the Christchurcb Post Office, and accepted a position as mail agent on the Niagara. He will make his first trip from Auckland on November 22nd, with the Vancouver Christmas mail. The resignation of Mr A. F. Nieoll, director- of the School of Art, was accepted with regret at yesterday's meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors. The resignation takes effect as from the end of the first term of 1928. It was decided to invite applications for the position in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.

Motions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. J. Hopkins and Mrs W. E. Simes were passed at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. The chairman (Mr M. E. Lyons) referred to the valuable services that Mr Hopkins had rendered io jswinvming, of which ho had always been a liberal supporter.
