GREYHOUND RACING. LEGALITY OF BETTING. ! j (bt cable— ratss associatiox—corraiCHr.) I (AUSTRALIA* AS'O X.Z. CAB LI ASSOCIATION.; j (Received October 30th, 5.5 p.m.l | LONDON, October 29. It is pointed out that the legality I of greyhound betting is not nuestioned as a result of the Court's decision. The verdict was purely on a technicality concerning tho allocation of regular stands for bookmakers. The decision to introduce the totalisator is faced with a mixed reception by owners, bookmakers, and bettors. Tiie majority regard it as an inevitable and splendid thing for racing; others are emphatic that it will bo harmful. Bookmakers are unanimously protesting, though prominent turf men fail to seo how it will prevent bookmakers from carrying on. Australia's example is extensively quoted in tho newspapers. The "Daily Telegraph" reviewing tho controversy, refers to the alleged increase in the Australian Government's revenue from tho totalisator and quotes one authoritative view to the effect that it is absolutely untrue that iu Australia, where bookmakers work alongside the totalisator, the revenue from the machine has definitely decreased and is decreasing yearly; likewiso in New Zealand it is but the plaything of women and children. ..
