ASHBURTON. ' PERSONAL. Mr E. P. V. Sealy, who has been manager of the Ashburton branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, since it was opened nearly three years ago,' has received notice of his transfer to Timaru in the same capacity, and leaves Ashburton in a- fortnight.. Mr K. B. Lambert, of Dunedin,- succeeds" Mr Sealy. Pneumonic Influenza. The death of an elderly person from pneumonic influenza, it being one of the two cases which have developed in the Ashburton County during last week, was reported to the County Health Inspector (Mr E. N. Johnson), on Saturday. Mr Johnson told a representative of Thb Press that these were the first two cases of this nature reported so far this year and they were from Wakanui and Bakaia respectively. The ouly other notifiable disease reported last week in the County, which has been particularly free this month, was a case 0f.T.8. from Allenton. Hakatere T jOdge. At the last meeting of Hakatere Lodge 'No. 6S, 1.0.0. F., Bro. H. Slade was the recipient of a past grand's certificate. The presentation was made bv N.G., Bro. D. "C. J. Osman, who congratulated Bro. Slade on his successful term of office. Motor-Cycle on Tire. A mild sensation was caused about 9 p.m. on Friday evening, at the corner of Tancred and Cass streets, when a motor-cycle, which had just left a local motor-cycle shop, suddenly burst into flames, "through petrol from the tank coming into contact a spark from the exhaust, caused through the engine back-firing. After some delay the blaze was extinguished, with the aid of wet sacks and buckets of water, and apart from the front tyre and the control wires, which were burned, no damage was done. Woman Injured. Mrs, Flora Collett, Princess street, was admitted to the County Hospital yesterday suffering from a fracture of the left arm. . The injury, was sustained at the Domain on Saturday night, when Mrs Collett tripped over a pole and fell heavily when watching the procession. Knocked Down by Car. Elliott Painter, aged seven years, son of Mr W. Painter, Willowby, was knocked down by a car driven by J. Maxwell, outside the Domain gates on Saturday. He was admitted to tie County Hospital suffering from minor injuries.
Motor-Cycling. "■ "At theinyitation of the South. Canterbury Motor-Cycle; Club, 15 members of the Ashburton .Club, members of *tho Pioneer Sports' Club,' Christ church," and Motor CM>, .'Ltd., gathered at the Bakaia Gorge yesterday, when there -'were about 70-: motor-cyclists present, in addition to a large number of spectators. ■ A sports-programme was carried out, the principal results'being: Musical chairs—o. CRICKET. The: Ashburton County Cricket Association's inter-club competitions were continued. on Saturday, when.a fresh .'set .of matches was commenced in all grades. Ashburton B v. Tinwaid. In the match between Ashburton B and Tinwald, played t>n the Domain, tho former made 2liin their first the outstanding performance being that K. Nieoll, who made 110. In the Junior B Grade-Liuriston met Tinwild, at Tinwald, and knocked up 131 runs
(A. Hooper 30, .W., Smith 25, J. Cromie 33, Goodwin 15). Tinwald replied with 112 runs for 5 wickets (B. Bell 11, B. McKenzie not out 52, C. Stills 12, A. Carroll not out 20). Methven met Celtic at Ashburton, and the latter, going in first, made 109 (51. Rooncy .15, E. Brophy 55. H. Lennon 12). Methven replied with 96 for the loss of sis wickets (O. Jess ep 16, W. Burrows 34, P. Watson 16). The best bowlers for Methven were P. Watson, who took 6 wickets" for 16 runs, and C. Topp 2 for 28.
MOUNT SOMERS.
Perfect weather favoured the opening of the Mount Soniers Lawn Tennis Club-held last week, when there was a large attendance of members and friends, including the president (Mr F. Peter) and Mrs Peter. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. Mr J. T. Bull, on behalf of the captain, Mr A. R. Beckley, welcomed members, and bade farewell to Mr and Mrs P. H. Jones, who are leaving the district. Mr and Mrs-Wallace and Mr Ellis and party, of Christchurch, were visitors to Mount Somers last week. Mrs W. Martin (Mount' Somers) is spending holidays in the North Island. Mrs T. Miller (Mount Somers) has returned from a visit to her daughter in Christchurch. Mrs Miller will celebrate her 91st birthday to-day. The long-delayed "John Hood Memorial" scheme is now to be definitely proceeded with, and a ■contract has been let for the erection of a memorial gate at the entrance to the Mt. Somers Librarv and tennis courts. Mr P. H. Jones (late headmaster of the Mount Somers School). Mrs Jones and family have left for the West Coast. Mr Jones will commence duties at Waiuta to-morrow. Mr W. H. Moses, a former resident of the district, has been appointed relieving headmaster of the Mount Somers School and will resume duties to-day. Mr W. N. Hood,, formerly of Mouru Somers, and who recently had his leg amputated, is the guest of Mrs I. F. Peache, Mount Somers Estate. Mrs- J. Murray, sen., of Timaru. is visiting her daughter, Mrs J. RLockhard, Mount Somers. Surfacemen are at present attending to the much-needed repairs of the main highway roads in the districtApart from the coolness of the winds, Friday was the brightest day experienced for a week, as the n ° rt west winds socgi dispelled the du.l ; misty conditions.
