WAIMATE.

TENNIS CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Waihao Downs Tennis Club the following office-bearers were elected: Patron, Mr A. V. Richards; president, the Rev. F. Chard; vice-presidents, Messrs J. C. Sheldon and T. A. Christie; treasurer, Mrs A. V. Richards; secretary, Mr Nauniann; committee. Misses d'Auvergne, Thompson, Meredith, :nid Falloon, and Mr J. Sheldon with the office-bearers. A committee was set up to have the courts repaired and top-dressed, and when this is carried out the date of the opening day of the season will be arranged. Medals Presented. Some members of' the Waimate Rugby Sub-Union wont out to Waihao Downs on Friday evening for the purpose of making the presentation of the medals won by the' Downs School at the Union's recent seven-a-side tournament. Mr R. Eddy, the president of the Union, was the speaker, and referred to the great response the Downs always made to the seven-a-side tournament, and congratulated the school on once more winning the country schools' competition. The boys to receive medals were: N. Thompson; H. Allen, M. Brown, R. Connor, W. Ainge, J. AValker, and A. Gray. Waimate School. The attendance in the infant department of the Waimate District High School is being depleted by the prevalence of measles and mumps, this being particularly the case iu the three lower classes of the infant rooms. Last week in these classes alone there were absent no fewer than 82 pupils, and the question is being considered of closing the infant room for a week or two. Unemployment. Unemployment is still rife in this district, there being about twenty men on the idle list, but there are no cases of hardship. With the advent of shearing operations, which will soon commence, the situation should be relieved. Southern Football Club. The Southern Football Club held an enjoyable smoke concert in the Savoy tearooms, the president (Mr R. R. Clear) ■ presiding over 'a good attendance of members, and also representatives of the Rugby Sub-Union, and other clubs, and kindred sports. A comprehensive list of toasts was honoured during the evening, and a very fine musical programme was given," those contributing being: Messrs G. Cordner, R. Hardcastle, A. Taiaroa, G. Carter, B. Nelson, and J. Bracefield. Mr J. Walker played the accompaniments. During the evening a resolution was passed to the effect that it be a recom"mendation to the Rugby Sub-Union that ' it hold a public social in honour of Mr ! D. Lindsay, a Waimate-born boy, son of ' Mr W. Lindsay, Studholme Junction, i who had been chosen as one of the All j Blacks to tour South Africa. |

Social Evening. A very pleasant evening was held at the Savoy tearooms, when Mr P. V. Stevens, president of the Northern Football Club, entertained the third grade team at a social gathering in honour of their winning the third grade competition, also the seven-a-side tournament medals. Items during the evening were contributed by the following: Mr C. Berry,

Misses Hodges and Nelson, Miss Tew and Mr Clark,. Mr D. Newall, Misses Carter and Nelson, Mr Dom Keyes, and Misses Clarke and Nelson. Mr H. Smith called on Mr W. Wyridliain, captain of the third grade 'team to make a presentation' to Mr Stevens. Mr Wyndham, speaking on behalf of : the members of the third grade team, asked Mr P. V. Stevens to accept the gift, which consisted of a cigarette case, holder, and match-box, as a token of esteem in which the members of his team held him.
