SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. His Honour Mr Justice Adams arrived here by the express from the north on Saturday. Mr C. S. Baldwin (president of the N.Z. Workers' Union) is at present visiting Timaru. The Rev. C. W*. Duncumb has returned from a visit to Pnlmcrston North and Wellington. Mr Knubley left on Saturday by the Mount Cook Motor Co.'s bus for Balmoral. Mr H. Robinson, Probation officer, returned from Wellington on Saturday. Mr G. Robinson, of the National Bank, is expected to return from Christchurch to-dav.

His Honour Mr Justice Frazer presided over a brief sitting of the Arbi- ; tratiou Court on Saturday, when an i award for timber yard workers was ! made on the terms of the Conciliation i Council's finding. I W.E.A. The Workers' "Educational Association's week-end School concluded on Saturday night with a lecture on "Psycho Analysis of Dreams," by the Rev. A. L. Knight, of Timaru. Garden Party. Favoured with ideal weather the garden party in aid of the St. Mary's Hall building fund at the residence of Mr. and Mrs A. Roberts, Park lane, was well attended. By the sale of beddingout plants and cut flowers and by the support accorded the various competitions it is expected that a considerable sum will be handed to the fund. Manual Training. The following resolution was passed at a combined meeting of the Timaru and District School Committee Association and the Timaru Technical Collego Board of Managers held to discuss the control of the manual training centre: "That this conference is of the opinion that in the best interests of the children attending the manual training centre the time has arrived when the control of that centre in Timaru should be vested with the Timaru Technical College Board of Managers." It was also decided that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to the Minister for Education, the Canterbury Education Board and the Education Department. Harbour Improvements, Lengthy correspondence regarding the Timaru Harbour Board's harbour .improvement Loan Bill will be discussed at the November meeting of the Board. It is stated that, the Board intends to place on record its disapproval of the action of the Loral Bills Committee in turning down.the Bill, and that the attitude of the three South Canterbury members of Parliament towards the Bill will also be discussed. Rowing Club's Carnival. The Timaru Rowing Club's Carnival •was continued in the Drill Hall on Saturday night before a fair attendance. The results of the tug-of-war contests were as follows: A grade Maoris beat Balmoral, by half an-inch, Rowing Club beat Maoris by 4 inches. "B grade—Rowing Club No.' I, beat • Maoris by 3.inches. C grade—Rowing Club beat Alhambra No. 2 by }., inch; Waimataifai 'beat Alhambra -No.' 3 by 2 inches; Glen-Hi No. 1 beat Hilton by 4 inch. Challenge pull—Timaru Druids beat Rovers by i an inch. High School Old Boys. .There was a good attendance at the 26th annual meeting of the Timaru High School Old Boys' Association on {Saturday night. The report stated that the membership stood at 301 as compared with 206 for the previous year. Included in the work set down for the new executive would be the preparation for the School Jubilee to take -place in 1930. The Jubilee should be .the most outstanding event in the history of the School and it •was necessary to prepare early for it. The balance-sheet showed that assets exceeded liabilities by £sl 12s. ' The election of officers resulted as follows: President. Mr G. D. Virtue; secretary, Mr D. Grant; treasurer, Mr J. Lamb; vice-presidents, Messrs 0. E. Hassall, S. D. Mason, and W. D. Bevell; committee, Messrs A. Leslie, E. Wallace, C. Thomson, J. Marriott, J. Ferrier, and 11. B. McClatchie; hon. auditor, Mr A. Lawson. It was decided to hold the Tcsehemakcr Cup race a week or two prior to the opening of the football season.
