♦ —:- LOSS, £2OOO. A fire at the workshops of Imperial Timbers, Ltd., Langdon's road, did extensive damage early yesterday morning, and the Company are losers to the extent of about; £2OOO. Valuable machinery was very seriously damaged, and the framework of the building was completely destroyed. ' The alarm was given at 0.00 a.m., the City Fire Brigade and St. Albans Brigade both turning out. For the first two hours no water was available, the premises being right on the boundary, but when the workers at the Sanitarium Co., nearby, arrived they assisted by pumping water into a small creels, making ir, available for the brigade. The fire-fighters did good work in confining the fire to the factory, as three-quarters of a million feel of timber were stored* alongside, and .1. .1. An outbreak of fire at Beath and Company's shop in Cashe! street was responsible for the Brigade being called out last evening at G. 52. The fire broke out in the back of the main electric switchboard, and the employees' efforts to extinguish it did more damage than the outbreak. -This was on account of the extinguishers being of the soda-acid type, i which the Fire Brigade state are not : . . effective in a fire connected with electricity, but add to the danger, the preparation being a conductor. The only effective extinguishers for ac eiec-trieally-caused fire are the foam or the tetra-chloride extinguishers, of which the latter is the better. Little damage was caused, but the show-eases and walls near the switchboard suffered. The need for protection against fire loss is obvious.
