A MONTH'S GAOL.

LICENSE CANCELLED FOR FIVE YEARS. Charged in the Magistrate's Court, yesterday, with being in a drunken state while in charge of a motor-car, David Evans was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. It was his second offence. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., was on the Bench. Evans was not represented by counsel. Senior-Sergeant Fitzpatrick said defendant had been in a state of drunkenness in Dickens street, and had been trying to crank his car. He could not start the engine, so he climbed into the car and went to sleep. He had been convicted on a similar charge in 1926. Defendant: "I'm sorry it happened your Worship." He asked that he be treated as leniently as possible. He had a position to go to. The Magistrate: You are not going to drive a car again for a few years. This is your second offence, and you are going to gaol this time without the option. The public safety must be protected somehow. Evans was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment. His license was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for five years.
