FILMS BEING PREPARED. LTHE PRESS Special Serrtce.] WELLINGTON, October 28. A picture a week is now the average of the New Zealand Government Publicity Office in its efforts to advertise the Dominion beyond the seas. Maori life and customs are about to receive the serious attention of the Cinematograph Branch of the service, and Mr A. H. Messenger, Officer in Charge of Publicity Work, has just left for Rotorua, taking with him a scenario writer, to prepare for a series of films dealing with the natives. One, at least, of these will be a feature film, and the cameramen will go up to commence shooting next month. Besides this, the office has an extensive programme before it. Wanganui River is to be filmed in January and will form the subject of a special effort, but before this much is to be done. It the weather permits. Christchurch will be taken from the air during nest month. Hawke's Bay saw the cameramen a week or two ago. They went up in search of blossoming orchards, but as the blossom did not lend itselr to the screen they were dispatched to Nelson, where orchards in blossom are now being filmed, and Hawke's Bay will be done towards Christmas. Another attempt to film Dunedin has failed owing to poor weather conditions. This is the second to break down, the first effort being one to film the capping celebrations last year. Camera men visited Dunedin this month, but had to leave without good pictures. Another trial will be made in the summer. Next week special films of the flax industry and of the New Zealand railway service are to be made. Following these, picures will be devoted to the honey industry, shearing, and sheepfarming, and to Waikaremoana from a scenic as well as a hydro-electric point of view. These will all be finished by the end of nest month. Recent films include Tongariro National Park, Mount Cook wintersports, Wairakei, Hamilton, Queenstown, the Stewart Island oyster trade, the West Coast, and- as far down as the Franz Josef Glacier.
