PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.) GREYMOUTH, October 2S. Mr D. M. Mcintosh, who has been on his annual holidays, has resumed his duties as Chief Postmaster at Greymouth. Mr F. \V. Furby, who acted during his absence, returned yesterday to Wellington. Nurse F. Hopkins, who has resigned her position on the Grey Hospital staff. has accepted an appointment in the Christehurch Sanatorium. Mrs H. J. Campbell and Miss J. . Fitzgerald (Blackball) will leave toj morrow for Christehurch. j Mr and Mrs N. Jones, of Timaru, | who have been the guests of Mr and Mrs Izzard, returned by to-day's exj press. ! Mr H. Chapman, District Eailwav | Traffic Manager for Canterbury and i Westland, accompanied by Mr j. McI Nair, District Engineer, arrived yesterday from Christehurch and proceeded to Boss. They returned to-day to Beefton. Mr A. V. McLuskie, of Blackball, who is recovering from a serious attack of pneumonia, will leave to-morrow for Canterbury, i j Magistrate's Court. At the Grcymouth Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., Francis Patrick* Bradv, who was represented by Mr W. J. Joyce, was charged with obtaining goods to the value of £1 10s. by means of false pretences from A. Harrison, draper, Greymouth, and, further, with having secured board and lodging to the value of £5 4s from P. J. Patterson, proprietor of the Union Hotel, Grcymouth. On the application of Detective Murch, a remand to October 31st was granted. Bail was not applied for. Michael Kearns, who was arrested for drunkenness yesterday during the cur- ; rency of a prohibition order, was remanded until November 7th for medical treatment. ! A plea of guilty was entered by An- | thony Shannon, who was arrested on | October 21st in a state of helpless j drunkenness, and had previously been | remanded for medical treatment. Shani non was convicted and ordered to pay £1 Sa medical expenses incurred. I Accident. I While Percy Vcale, a son of Mr G. I Veale, of Blackball, was cranking a car •at Blackball this morning the engine backfired with the result that the lever flew back and fractured his right arm below the elbow. Paparoa Mine Dispute. The dispute between the management and employees of the Paparoa mine I regarding cavilling for places is still unsettled. The men turned up to work this morning, but the request for a draw for working places was not acceded to by the management, and they returned to their homes. The trouble is riot regarded seriously, as it is understood that orders are slack at the present time, and there is a likelihood of the mine experiencing broken time until j the market for its product improves. Burglary at Blackball. j A draper's shop at Blackball conducted by Mrs H. G. Carter was broken into last night and articles stolen. j Victoria Park. j j A deputation from the Automobile Asj sociation waited on the Greymouth Trot- I I ting Association asking that the Club j should make Victoria Park available ; as a camping ground for motorists during the summer months. It was pointed : out that the Club could make a small charge per diem and provide lighting, j water, and petrol facilities. The deputation's request met with a sympathetic reception and the club will give its decision later. Kailway Accident. j Severe injuries were .suffered by a ; railway locomotive fireman, John Bob- ■ ert Johnson, who was struck by the cowcatcher of the engine attached to a special coal train which arrived at Greymouth from Bapahoo at 1.10 o 'clock this afternoon. Johnson stepped off a stationary engine near the riverside station on to the adjacent track and ! failed to notice the approaching train, , | the engine of which struck him, throwing him against a railway waggon standing on another track. Medical aid was ' immediately sought, and he was sent to < the hospital. He received a severe i gash on the head and injuries to the ] shoulder blade. i Tunnel Traffic. Goods traffic conveyed from the West i Coast through the Otira tunnel for the ' week ending to-morrow, totals 8552 tons. s Death Under Anaesthetic \ At an inquest held at Westport to- ' day before Mr E. Fox, Coroner, ! touching the death of Sarah Annie Duf- ] field, who died in the Buller Hospital on ( Wednesday during an operation, evi- t dence was given that the cause of death ' was shock following .on an operation, j and a verdict was returned accordingly, l Obituary. ■* The death occurred yesterday at his < residence, Nine Mile road, Westport, of Mr James Slowey, aged 83 years. The , deceased came to Westport about 45 < years ago, and was manager successive- £ ly of the old Guiding Star and Beacons- i field mines. Later he purchaser a property on the Nine Mile road and turned : his attention to farming. He leaves i three sons and three daughters—the i Eev. Mother Mary Augustine (Reeftou Convent), Sister Mary Phillipa (Dune- t din), and Miss Slowey, head teacher at Eanzau, Nelson. i
