RACES AT MOTUKARARA. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. The ftipi-ii:- Meeting of tin- K.mk- Pen in .suiu Ka.-ing Club will be held ~u ;h>- wui. ; appointed Motiikarara racecourse to-day. ami ■■ with the promise of lino weather '.he tixtur. , promises to establish a record for the popular • suburban racing Ijnily. A ghin.-i; through . the well-filled programme revoais the presence jut some high-class hordes, and the fait alone ■ that the club has attr.-u-ted three of the inn.-: I fancied New Zealand Cup i-andiilaH's should ; ;nvesl the Meeting with unusual interest. It 1 is not often thai galloper.-; of the standard I of fount Cavour. Footfall, and Kapier are : billed to clash in a race outsii.li> a metropoliI tan course, and the r-lub must be considered i indeed fortunate in being able to give the j public surh an opportunity of seeing them in ! action a week prior to th.e big two-mile coni test. The remaining races, including two . trotting events, each present an 1 titeres tir.g • aspect for investors, and with the attractive bill of far? offered, the assembiag- should j reach record oroportions. To suit the eonj venienci? of City enthusiasts, 'he r-st rac • will not start until t p.m.. and special train arrangements have been made ai-cordiuely. Donne won comfortably at. his first start in the Novice Plate over six furlongs at the recent Kurow Meeting, while Ltiminant made a good impression by annexing the HighWeight Handicap* one mile, at Kangiora. last Monday. The issue appears In res! between this pair, while Wreath of Myrtle promises to he also in the money. 1.40 p.m.—UALS-.VELI. HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. (if. >|"ote Si:'. Amorist . . 7 2 Tloylake . . Scoff will be favoured by a firm track, and will improve on his performance at Rangiorn, where the conditions did not suit him. Motor Smash's record at. Geraldine will not be overlooked, and the same remark applies to Hoylake, who has not bad a race since that fixture. Speculation will be well distributed, but it will probably transpire that a trio most sought after comprise Scoff, Motor Smash, and Hoylake. 2.20 p.m.—DUVAUCHKI.LK TROT .'in .harness), of 85 sovs. 2.2(i class. Count Cavour and Satrap will bo bracketed on the machine. The meeting of (he three top-weights on the eve of their New Zealand >Cup engagement will arouse keen interest in tho race, and it is certain that they will contest favouritism. Each has been executing splendid, track work, and Count Cavour and Rapier have an advantage over Footfall, in that the.y have had a little more racing in the past few weeks than Mr Dnlgety's gelding. On the other hand, Count Cavour did not give followers much assistance by his two races at Dunedin. and Rapier, although succeeding in the Kurow Cup from a four-horse field, did not show any prominence in the Champion Plate at AVellington, where, however, ho encountered high-class opposition. If there is anvthing in the suggeston that Footfall is an utilikelv starter in the New Zealand Cup owing to lack of recent racing, then he must be at a disadvantage in to-day's race, and following that_ argument, it is quite on the cards that Rapier, better served with his recent efforts, will be more in favour. Count Cavour will' also havo an army of admirers, as he is a power always to be considered, but over the distance the Greyspcar horse should hold him safe also. Tho remainder of the field will serve to make a reasonable field, hut with n continuance of the present firm track conditions, !"'ey do not present strong opposition to tti so above them. It will be interesting to see what will he the ultimate favourite, but present indications point to Rapier, Footfall, and Count Cavour being finally selected in that order. 3.40 p.m.—LE DON'S HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. 7f. | Thorndaie . . 9 1 Peho . . 7 12 j Rascal .. 813 Oold Mint . . 711 Tarleton . . 8 10 Moratorium 7 7 Sir Roy . . 8 7 No Response 7 7 Fresco .. Thorndale's weight was raised from 8-8 to 9-1 ns n result of his victory in the Fernside Handicap at Rangiora, but this penalty should not prevent him from again being prominent, as he is very well at present, and weight does not stop a good horse over his favourite (listance. The stable will also he represented by Rascal, but the Ormond cast-off will have to improve on his Kurow and Oamaru performances to have any chance in this company. Sir Roy may have benefited by his race at Rangiora, while Gold Mint ran' well .enough at Wellington to suggest his prospects. Goosestep has been galloping attractively on the track of late, nnrl is now ?;iven the opportunity of repaying his owners or a sequence of disappointments. To reduce the possibilities to three, one is tempted to mention Thorndaie, Gold Mint, and Goosestep. 4.20 p.m.—KATTUNA HIGH-WEIGHT HACK HANDICAP, of 90 sovs. Ira, Jarretiere . . 9 10 Lancer . . 9 7 Wreath o' No Response 9 4 Myrtle 910 Gay Bird . . i> 3 Master Purple Plumes 9 2 Clarence 9 9 Scrambler 9 0 Armchair . . 9 8 Spearmau 9 0 Gay Jim .. 9 7 The above contestants, to he ridden by hurdle or steeplechase horsemen, provide a hard problem for investors, but with the Chokehore stable in winning vein at present, strong support will be forthcoming for Scrambler, who has been getting through some promisng track work. Master Clarence, and Armchair offer the most opposition. 5 p.m.—BRACKENFIELD FLYING HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. of. Money Order has not had a race since the Christchureh Hunt Meeting, but on recent track gallops he has shown he is still possessed of marked speed, and only has to get away on equitable terms to make the remainder "of the field realise his superiority. Sagittarius and Arrowmir are also speedy over the distance, while if Solgele is reserved from the Halswell Hack Handicap he will contest the lead for a good portion of the distance. The public, bowev.r will probablv place their confidence in Money Order, with Sagittarius and Solgele | next in demand.
