INDECENT ASSAULT.
(FRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) AUCKLAND, October 28. A plea for lenient treatment made on behalf of George William Atford, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault on a young girl, on account of accused having been badly gassed in the war, was not acceded to by Mr Justice Herdman. His Honour said the law. looked upon offences against little children as being extremely serious, and for such crimes there was a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment. The tendency nowadays seemed to be to consider the future of the prisoner before the safety of society, but it was his duty to consider first what could he done to prevent offences of this kind. It had been stated by a police officer that the prisoner had. on three occasions, been guilty of offences in regard to the same child. Atford was sentenced to reformative detention for a period not exceeding twelve months.
