EMPIRE IN RETREAT. J "AGE OF GREAT POWERS j ENDED." 1 (BT fABLS —FBISS AUOCIAVI.IIT—comiOBT.) ' ICLTRALIA.I AND X.Z. CABL* ASSOCIATION.; i ( IvCi-.-'ivpfl October 27th ; JO.IO p.m.'. • LONDON, October 27. Mr Gilbert Murray is reported by . the "Daily Telegraph'' as declaring, in j a speech at Oxford, that the British I Empire was in a critical condition, j There were four great Empires before. j and it was dangerous then for one to do anything without; consulting (lie others. Three of these Empires had been shattered to pieces, and only the British Err.pire was left, and it was in a precarious condition. The age of Great Powers was cnde.i, therefore, and the time was past when we could do practically what we liked. The Empire before was increasing by genera! impetus, now it was in. retreat. In spite of difficulties, however, we were on the up grade as a nation, but must play for caution, avoid- war, revolution, or any shock to our credit. The dislike felt against the four great Empires before the war was now concentrated against Great Britain.
