OBITUARY.
—« — MR K. J. BETTS. Tlie death occurred at his residence, Durham street north, yesterday, of a very old employee of the Christchureh Press Company, Ltd., Mr Robert J. Betts, whose service with the company extended over a period of nearly 45 vears. The- late Mr Betts was employed in the jobbing department in the days of hand-setting, but when linotvpes were installed he was one of the first operators. Ho was a very conscientious workman, and was veiy well liked !>v his colleagues, 111-liealtli compelled liim to give up work some months ago. He leaves a widow, and a family of two sons and two daughters.
MR T. RETALLICK. The passing of Mr Thomas Retallick removed a highly respected and popular farmer from the Amberley district. The late Mr Retallick was for some years shepherding in the Amberley district, afterwards managing the late L. C. Gardiner's estate, "The Deans," for a number of years. Later ho acquired a portion of the estate, and also bought the old homestead of Messrs Greneys, at Grenev's road, where he resided up to the time of his death. The deceased was 'a successful breeder of half bred sheep and took many prizes with exhibits at the various shows. He was a trustee of the Amberley Druids Lodge, a past president of the Amberley Breeders' Association, and an ex-Coun-cillftr of the Kowai County Council. The funeral was largely attended fy residents of the .surrounding districts, the Rev. G. dimming officiating at the "•raveside. The bearers were members of the Druids' Lodge. -Wreaths were sent bv the Hope of Amberley Lodge, U.A.O'D., Amberley Breeders' Association] N.C. CAPTAIN HORATIO GORDON. [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, October 27. Captain Horatio Gordon, who died yesterday, was born in Aberdeen on July 49tli, 1854. Ho joined the famous Australian White Star liner Thermopylae as apprentice.on her maiden.voyage, and rose to the position of first mate. -' Subsequently he; was on' the articles of another celebrated vessel, the Ascalon. Then, for eleven years, he was master of the Shaw-Savill sailing ship Tarana'ki trading to New Zealand. In December, 1897, he was appointed by the Otago .Harbour Board master' of the f .ug Plucky, and in? October- 1902; was appointed Deputy Harbour. Master under Captain Thomson, a posiFion that. he held till his retirement m April, 1923.
