ROYAL COLONIAL INSTITUTE.
ESSAY COMPETITION. The Christchurch branch of the Royal Colonial Institute recently conducted an. essay competition on subjects relating to the Empire. Entries were received from pupils of schools in the Canterbury district. The subjects were:—Class A: The Importance of Research in Tropical Diseases .Affecting Men, Animals, -and Plants within the Empire. Class B: The Development of the British Empire in Malaya. .Class'C: The Life and Work of Warren-Hastings. Class A was stricted to pupils of 16 years or over on July 31st; 1927. Class B to those over 14 and under 16, and Class Cto those under the age of 14. 'ln.the local competition, which was in addition to but independent of the Empire competition, the following gained the special prizes awarded:— Class A—Walter H. Price, St. Andrew's College. Class B—W. J. Monk, St. Andrew's College. Class C —K.. X. Robertson, St. Andrew's College. Essays from the Canterbury pupils have gone forward to London to be judged with others from all over tho British Empire.
