ABUSE OF CHARITY.
WELLINGTON HOSPITAL BOARD VICTIMISED. [THE PRESS Special Service.] • WELLINGTON, October 27. There are fourteen men in Wellington to whom the Social Welfare Committee of the Wellington' .Hospital Board will never again incline a thetic ear, for they bit the hand that fed them. Nominated for positions on Government relief works at. Nelson, they were provided with boots and blankets and were told to catch the boat on the Thursday night. Only i eight men joined the boat, and of them but four or five reported for duty. Some 1 of the others sold the equipment issued them —a matter which will be probably investigated further. This unexpected state of affairs was revealed by the chairman (Mr G. Petherick) at a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board to-day. "That sort of thing, I am sure, would not be tolerated by any section of the community,": said Mr Petherick. So far as the committee was concerned, he added, the men were struck off the lists, and on no consideration would they be given any further assistance. With regard to those who had disposed of the equipment issued to them, the matter had been placed in the hands of the police, and no doubt more would be heard about it later on.
