'•I an: not going to scratch before davlight in tho niorning for nil the Side.vs under the sun," declared a member, amidst laughter, at a recent meeting of the Manawatu County Council in the course of a discussion on the Summer Time Bill. "My clock is going to remain the same." lie said, "and I think every other dairy farmer in the country will do the same." It was decided to alter slightly the time of the committee meetings. In the early post-war days, when German paper currency commenced its meteoric decline in exchange value, thousands of people throughout the world were tempted to hare a "flutter'' by buying German "paper" in anticipation of a restoration of its earlier value. In the majority of cases paper marks were purchased, but these soon lost all value except as curios or mementoes of a foolish speculation. One Auckland resident invested a modest £SO in this financial gamble, but he subscribed towards German Government bonds, and in return received enough paper to cover the walls of a room. He retained the bulky and apparently valueless package till this year, when he contemplated destroying all but a few of the soecimens in it. On the advic; of a banker, however, these bonds wore sent to Germany,'and last week the Aueklander received in exchange a number -of most artistically printed securities of various denominations, these being convertible locally into English money totalling £l2B. The only regret that the New Zealand investor has is that he didn't risk €-"000 instead of £SO, seven years ago. for a return of over 150 per cent.- in that time is worth a risk. •
