UNEMPLOYMENT.
♦ SHOULD FUND BE CLOSED ? CITIZENS' COMMITTEE MEETING A meeting of the Christchurch Citizens' "Unemployment Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Mr E. H. Andrews presiding. Advice was received that Derry's .Military Band would give a concert in Victoria square on the evening of November 6th, provided the City Council advertised it and arranged lor.collectors. The Minister for Labour wrote- stating that it was not possible for the Government to subsidise the amouut spent on relief at the relief depot, as the committee in charge of the depot was not a public body. The chairman said that it was evident that nothing more could be done. The Rev. P. Kevell said that uexb year the committee would have to see that the work done was for local bodies and that it bo approved, so that a subsidy couid be obtained. Mrs A. E. Herbert pointed out that a lot of the work done from the relief depot was for the Domain Board and the City Council. It was decided thai the treasurer supply a report of how the money was expended, though the chairman said that ho was not sanguine of a subsidy. It was decided to close the relief deuot on November sth. The treasurer (Mr A. F. Drayton) submitted the following report:— Payments.

In moving the adoption of the report Mr Drayton said that with spring advancing the people were less inclined to give, as they thought times would be getting busier. It seemed as if consideration must be given soon to closr ing the fund. Mr W. E Leadley said that for the past few weeks the conimitt.ee was just struggling along to discharge its liabilities. They had been unable to. take additional men. Regarding the. work done in cleaning up Bealey avenue., he considered the Reserves Committee of the City Council should pay for that. Mr Andrews s'ai.d the committee should carry on until they knew what amount of . lubsidy was to come from the Government. It was decided to make application for the subsidy, and the report was adopted. labour Department's Report. The following- report was, submitted, by the. Labour Department:—■ Total unemployed on register 348 Total unemployed last week ... 331 Decrease ... ... 33 Two hundred::ftnd tb.irty-.four men with 677 dependents; 144 without dependents During the week. employment was found for 67 men. The report was adopted. It was decided to meet again on Npvember 7th.
