NOTES ON THE RACING. s (special to ths pmss.) Favourite Fails. GREYMOUTH, October 25. In tho Tradesmen's Handicap Homelight carried the confidence of backors, but at no stage of tho journey did he flatter his supporters. Heritor was early in front, and carried on the running from Royal Audubon, Connie Dillon, and Homelight. Heritor held his advantage over the concluding stages and won very nicely with Val Logan in third place, and Homelight fourth. Danny Boy did not start correctly, and at no stage did ho show tho speed he is credited with possessing. Racing experience, however, is bound to improve him. A Nelson Success. L. F. Berkett, from Nelson, provided the winner of the Gieseking Handicap in Louisiana, who trotted much more solidly than he had done on tho first day and, at the finish held a lot in reserve from Nelson Wood, behind whom R. W. Franks had the drive, a most uncomfortable one for him. Kelson Wood made most of the running, and when ho gains a littlo more stamina ho will possibly do a whole lot better. Dolores again,, went a solid race, and Comfort struggled into fourth place at the finish, just ahead of Taipoiti. Nancy McKinney did not leave tho mark, and is plainly a rattle-headed customer with torrents of speed. Acre Prerails. B. Jarden, on Acre, rodo a nice raco in tho Hurricane Handicap, and the patience he displayed was probably the reason of the horse's victory. Great Form was the Barricade:-, with Royal Authoress handy, and Acre a good way back. Acre joined the leading party two furlongs -from home, and came away in the straight to win comfort-
ably. Now that Acre has strtu-lc a winning vein he may continue it. He is one of the Author Dillon breed, a recommendation in itself. There was nothing else in the race of outstanding merit. Bertha Bingen stumbled commencing the last round, turning a complete somersault. Interesting Kace. The Labour Day Handicap provided quite an interesting race, for after Rose Logan, always on the outside, and Thorpie, had carried on the running for the greater part of the journey, Orphan came to light with an all-conquering run and showed himself a class above the rest. He won very easily at the finish, and at times showed a lot of speed. Rose Logan was carried along by Thorpie. who is a more than useful sort, anil might win a raco before long. Quality showed a rare burst of speed over the la3t part of the journey, and favoured by a run on the rails got to within threu lengths oi the leader. Jackie Audubon had every chance, but failed to run on at the finish. Kedmere misbehaved herself at the post, and is quickly qualifying for a place on the schooling list. Horotane Shapes Well. There was a good race for the Cobdcn Handicap, of twelve and a half furlongs, Pctronius, n winner on the first day, being made a warm favourite. He had every chance, being well placed throughout, and was in the lead entering upon the last half mile. At this stage Horotane appeared on tho scene. In a fighting finish she showed more pluck than did Petronius, and was going away at the end. Horotane is a well-grown filly by Logan Pointer, and looks like developing into a more than useful race mare. Dahlia Dillon went a good race until the last two furlongs, when she faded out badly. Jubilee Handicap. A good amount of interest was takeu in tho Jubilee Handicap, for which five horses went to the post. Cardinal Logan being better backed th*n Bonny Logan and Peter 15ingen, with Golden Devon the outsider of the party. The last-named hud every chance, for he struck his gait smartly, and at one stage had a lead of over twenty lengths. Hendriksen, behind Cardinal Logan, was always in second place, while Acron was badly left When the pace quickened over the last lap Golden Devon was soon beaten, and Cardinal Logan mado him look a second-rater. The New Zealand Cup favourite showed a fine burst of speed as he gathered up the lender, with Bonny Logan always handy. In the straight Cardinal Logan came away to win very nicely. It was a most impressive win, and showed Hendrikson's horse to bo at the top of his form. Peter Bingen had a good run all the way, but seemed to have nothing in reserve at the finish, although he beat the tiring Golden Devon. Acron was left at the post, but showed wonderful speed once on the journey. A Stayor. Comfort won tho Ngahere Handicap simply because of lior staying ability. Not a brilliant performer, sho stuck to her work and fairly outstayed Jlorrijigs, a gelding by Nelson Bingen with n reputation -for s,peed that he failed to live up to. Merrijigs may bo as good as his many Coast admirers believe him to be, but in this race ho had every chance and failed. Taipoiti showed a lot of speed, but was very lucky to be socond, and it was plain that Alborn, tho driver of Merrijigs, was caught napping. An Exciting Contest. Tho Whirlwind Handicap was perhaps the most exciting race of the Meeting, for after Lady Matchlight had shown the way over tho first part, Tho Toff raced to the front and carried on the running for one round, with Great Form making up his ground, and Dillon's Pride and Lady Matchlight handy. M. Holmes drove a patient race on Lady Matchlight, and came with a burst in tho straight to win.
