WITHOUT WATER.
GREYMOUTH'S PLIGHT. (SPECIAL TO TH» PRESS.) GREYMOUTH, October 24. Greyniouth to-day was without a water supply. The trouble is due to a tree washed down by the flood waters anjashing the lid of the sump at the borough pumping station, with a result that th: sump quickly became blocked witii gravel and silt, necessitating the stoppage of all pumping operations. The electrical pumping plant was rendered inoperative on Saturday evening through the flooded state of the river and the _ emergency gas plant was put into action, making the task of maintaining the water supply a slow undertaking. The supply has been cut off since about nine o'clock this morning. The Borough staff were busy effecting repairs to-day, but at 7.30 this evening the supply had not been restored. Owing to the town being crowded with visitors to the Trotting Club's Meeting, the absence of a water supply is causing great inconvenience, especially to hotel and accommodation house keepers, while the position would be much more serious/, in the event of an outbreak of fire.
