A PROPHECY?

AWAITING FULFILMENT. In the early days of Canterbury public opinion was divided regarding the wisdom of constructing the Lyttelton tunnel. It is related of the late Mr George Gould, a prominent business man, that when it was decided to construct the tunnel lie asserted: "Boats will be coming -ip the river when the railway is scrapped!" Althoug, the railway has had a long innings and seems "set," the likelihood of Mr Gould's chance remark becoming a fufllled prophecy is considered by some to be quite within the range of possibility.
