The Charms of Sumner.
Foreword by the Mayor. Nestling in the fold of the hills, facing the sun, and providing shelter in one part or the other from almost every wind that blows, Sumner is acknowledged throughout the Dominion to be a seaside resort offering to residents and visitors alike an unparalleled combination of all the most desirable essentials which ensure the welfare and happiness of a community. It has an equable climate, which tests, taken over a number of years, have shown to be an average of 12 degrees warmer during the winter months than that of Christchurch City, with a corresponding reduction in temperature during the heat of summer owing to the cool sea breezes. There is a first-class tram service to and from the City—B miles distant—and splendid road access available for cars, etc. a The advantages of hill residence, combined with sea air and a beach second to none in the Dominion for bathing purposes, undoubtedly place Sumner in. the front rank as a place of residence and a district in which families may be reared under the happiest and healthiest circumstances. The municipal services provided are all that are required to meet presentday necessities. The water supply to the borough has been extended in order to meet the growth of population and the increasing number of visitors, while two additional artesian wells are now being bored so that a more than sufficient supply of water shall be available for any possible additional requirement in the future. Practically the whole of the Tborough is now reticulated for drainage purposes, the recently-completed sewerage system for the Redcliffs area having resulted in a marked advance in settlement in that portion of the borough. Gas and electricity, under municipal control, are also available to residents. The sea-front, with its peculiar and beautiful rock formation, inspires admiration; while it will be agreed by all who have had the privilege of enjoying the beautiful views obtainable from the hill portions of Sumner, that in no other borough of its size can such a diversity of beauty and charm be obtained. There can be no doubt that, as years go by, and the population of the City of Christehurch increases, Sumner will be more and more appreciated, and its beauties and many advantages as a place of residence will be fully recognised. W. H. NICHOLSON, Mayor of Sumner.
