COMEDY AT THE CRYSTAL.
"THE LOVE THRILL." LACK A LA PL-ANTE FEATURED. Ther» Is no unpleasant after-t33te about "The Love Thrill," which is drawing-room comedy, and brimming over with good, h°althy laughs. Last night's big audience at Crystal Palace found the humour of the situations irresistible, and enjoyed every minute of a capitally acted and we'i-.-tagod story. It i' somewhat noteworthy that the lady canvasser for life insurance previously lias not been exploited. Probably tiie explanation is that not every director ran lay his bands on a Laura La I'lante to give actuality, and vim. and "co" to the character. Ruin stares her father in the fa'-e. and it is a caso of desper.it.- remedies. To write a jiolicy for a well-known wealthy young bachelor. Laura La Planlc decides to impersonate tho young and fascinating widow of an African explorer who is reported to have been killed and eaten by Congo cannibals Bryant Washburn, who is' the wealthy young bachelor, is a great friend of the unfortunate explorer, and meets the widow and install.-, her in the apartments he had taken for the explorer. When Tom .Moore, the explorer, who. after nil, has not been eaten, turns up at his apartments and finds them occupied by a charming young lady who is, posing- ,-is his widow, thu humorous* situations develop rapidly, and each succeeding one adds uproariness to the comedy. The manner in which the happy ending is evolved is too good to spoil by describing, but right to the final curtain the humour sparkle--. Laura La I'lante outshines any of her previous records as a comedienne, and never oversteps the restraint that is ever the hallmark of the artistic interpretation of humour. Tom Mooie makes a tine figure as the African explorer, and Bryant Washburn is well ea.-l as the wealthy young bachelor. There was also screened "The "Whirlwind of Youth,'' a drama of love and war. with the first-named predominating, in which Lois Moran and Donald Keith were starred. It is a pleasing story, very finely acted and presented. The Australian Gazette was noteworthy for excellent views of Brisbane. The Symphony Orchestra, under Mr Alfred ,T. Bunz, contributed appropriate selections, including Mendelssohn's "Wedding March,''' which was played as the overture.
