FINANCE AND COMMERCE.

.MEAT BOARD'S POWERS. OTAGO CRITICISM. (press association telegram.) DUNEDIN, October 22. At the annual meeting of the South Otago Freezing Company, Mr James Begg criticised the M-sat Board's power to prevent sales of freezing works, which had made such works worthless as securities! Presumably, he said, theMeat Board was not exceeding the power granted by the Government, so the responsibility must rest upon the latter. The Reform Government apparently approved of this confiscatory legislation, and its example might be greedily followed by more radical successors. They could easily imagine a Board set up with power to veto all transfers of land or other property. By its action in making property valueless, a useful precedent had been given b,y the Reform Government. FOREIGN LOANS. KECORD MONTH IN U.S.A. (jrr CABLE—r-RESS ASSOCIATIOK—COPTRIGHT.) In October, 1916, the flotation for the fntire month was 372,736,000 dollars, comprising war loans to the Allies, of which 300,000,000 went to England. FRUIT GUARANTEE. MINISTER REFUSES INCREASE. [THE PBBSB Special Sirrtce.] WELLINGTON, October 22. The efforts of tho Fruit Export Control Board ,to induce the Minister for Agriculture to increase the Government guarantee for exported apples and pears has been vain. Since then representations nave been made (to the Minister that this reduction is too great, but the Hon. Mr Hawken has declined to alter th figure. It is stated that the 10s given by the Government is more than sufficient to cover the cost of marketing. PETROL PRICES. "Through the action of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Motor Traders' Association,'' said the president of the Association, Mr G. Tench, to a representative of The Pkess, "motorists of Christchurch have had the benefit of buying their petrol at garages at a reduced price. This action was decidted upon about- two months ago because of complaints ot price-cutting at roadside stations. It was sought by this step to achieve .a uniform price by which all petrol retailers would abide. Since this step, the proprietors of pumps and the garage proprietors have been negotiating, and are within measurable distance of an amicable working arrangement. "Some motorists are under tbe impression that the price of petrol has been increased again at the garages. Such is not the case, and it wjjl be some time befrre an increase will be announced by ttie garage proprietors."
