RATES OF WAGES.

SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIBELBSS.) RUGBY;,, October 20. A detailed comparison of the present wages rates in British; industries with those paid before the jwar is given in the Ministry of Labour Gazette, and shows a general rise, with marked variations in the proportion of increase between various trades. It is estimated that at the end of last month the weekly full-time rates of wages for those classes of adult workpeople for which information is available averaged between 70 per cent, and 75 per cent, above the level of August, 1914, as compared with 170 per cent, to 180 per cent, at the end of December, 1920, whenVages generally were at their highest level. As considerable reductions in the normal weekly working hours were made m nearly all industries in 1919 and 1920, the percentage increase in hourly rates of wages since 1914 is substantially greater. The present average level of hourly rates is approximately 90 per cent." to 100 per cent, above that of August, 1914.
