JUNIOR A COMPETITION. In bright snnehine the junior A and soburban competition* were continued at Wilding Park on Saturday. Early in the afternoon a strong wind was blowing across the courts, but did not seriously interfere with the play. AVONSIDE CLUB. There was a large attendance of members and supporters at the opening of the Avonside Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon In declaring the season opened. Mr F. J Murray, -president of the club, stated that the club'was to be congratulated on a successful' vear. In referring to the present position of the club, he outlinedits financial position, and also the manner in which improvements- had been carried out. The club had been successful in the competitions, and also at the Dominion championships. Mr Murray emphabised the fact that it was the children on whom thev -would be relying for new member's, and special provision should be made Jot them. , , Trophies won last season were presented as follows':—Ladies' singles championship, Misa" M. SUMNER JUNIORS. The Sumner Junior Tennis Club, which is now a section of the Sumner Croquet Club, opened its season on Saturday afternoon. ' Apologising for the. unavoidable absence of the president, Mr T. F. Chambers, Mr G. F. Allen referred to the competitions won in Christchurch last season by R. Dobson, singles, and C. Carter and R. Dobson, doubles, and to the recent successes in athletic championships gained by old Sumner scholars, Mary Browne, Audrey Dawe, Joan Gibson, and S. East. Thanks were due to Mrs Chambers for her organisation, and to Miss M. Reese for her keen interest in the club's welfare. Mr Murray bad promised, two cups for competition, as well as prizes, and the committee wcro preparing to put the courts in good order. After calling for cheers for Mr and Mrs Chambers and Miss Reese, Mr Allen declared the season ppen, and wished the members success and pleasure for tho new year.
KANGIORA CLUB. The John Knox Tennis Club opened (lie season on Saturday on the court adjoining the Presbyterian Church, with which it is connected. The membership of the club was woll represented, and others interested in it were present. The Rev. \V. K. Hutchison declared the season open, and Mrs Hutchison and Miss Rogers played the first ball over tho net. Afternoon tea was included in the proceedings. The court pnt down last year was tar-coated recently, and is now in good playing condition. Ayres' C.S. Tennis Balls, the official ball of the Canterbury Provincial and the N.Z. Lawn Tennis Associations for this season. The master ball for master strokes on grass and hard courts. British and best. —4
