NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. On Friday evening a reunion of the Young Women's Bible Class in connexion with the Methodist Church, was held in the schoolroom. The proceedings were commenced with a tea, followed by a social, at which a. discussion on the various phases of tho work took place. Musical items -re given and games were plaved. Mrs C. Blair presided. Miss L. Hodder, the travelling secretary of the Young Woni"''s Movement in connexion with the church, wa also present, and gave an address, after which expressions of appreciation of hrr work,-were voiced bv Mrs Hamilton, Miss D. Eowe, and Miss E. Ayers. A very enjoyable evening was spent, concluding vith a special vote of thanks to the president. The anniversary services of the Methodist Sunday School were held yesterday, and in sp : 'e of rain, which continued throughout the day, the attendances at all three services were very good, especially at the afternoon service, when the* school prizes were presented. The Rev. W. G. Slade, of Kaiapoi, was the preacher for both the morning and afternoon services, his adr dresses being mainly to the children. At the afternoon service, the Mayoress, Mrs W. A. Eowse, presented the prizes. The eveniig service was taken by the Eev. H. Cottom (Ohoka). Special hymns were sung from tho Sunday School Anniversary sheets, the children j being trained bv their siiperiutondei.*, Mr C. f Avers. Mr A. Lane presided at the organ. The anniversary services will be continued next Thursday, when a tea meeting will be held, and the ann...l report ' ' the Sunday S<-h<*r>' work will be presented. After a very strong nor'-wester- on Saturday, the weather changed early on S- •;<' morning to the sou'-west, and rain fell throughout most o'f the day. The fall has been general, and will bo very much welcomed. WAIAU. A meeting, of the committee of tlie -Amuri Flower Show was held in the Library Hall on Thursday afternoon, when Mr G. W. Aldridge presided over a large and representative attendance from all parts of the district. The schedule for the annual show to be heid in January was revised, a number of alterations and additions being made, particularly in the amateur and the decorative sections. It was decided to endeavour to procure a competent professional gardener to judge, and it was also decided to ask Mrs B. L. Blunden, of Waikari, to judge the decorative classes. _ Collectors for special prizes were appointed. Arrangements for / afternoon tea were left in the hauds of Mesdames D. C. Macfarlane and P. R. Dearden. It was decided that Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., should be asked to perform the opening ceremony. The secretary was instructed to havo the schedules issued early iu December. After some discussion, it was decided that catalogues be dispensed with this year. The final arrangements were left in the hands of a committee consisting of the president, Dr. F. R. Smale, Major Northcote, and Messrs G. White, A. H. Baker, W. D. Banks, and the secretary.
OXFORD. Throughout Friday night ftnd Saturday morning a terrific gale blew from tlie north-west, accompanied, at times, by torrential rain. The 45th anniversary of the Oxford Presbyterian Church i was celebrated by a public tea. in the Town Hall on ?ri'day evening. At the subsequent public meeting, Mr G. Wood presided. An address was given by Mr 0.. W. Brown (Methodist), and a varied entertainment was provided by. visitors from Rangiora and Cust, as well as by members of the local church. The recalls were numerous and a very pleasant evening was spent. Those contributing were:—The chairman, reading; piano duets by Misses Jean Baxter and Daphne Wright; instrumental selections (piano), Miss Ivy Gainsford; recitation. Mrs Tull; songs, Misses Ranby and Horn. Mrs Trollope, and Messrs McAlpine and Gainsford; and a" duet by' Messrs A. Gainsford and R. Inwood. The accompaniments were playI ed by Mrs Trollope, Mrs McAlpine, and Miss I. Gainsford.
SPRINGSTON. A series of euchres and dances run under the auspices of the Social Committee was advanced,a further stage on Saturday cv-nrnor. Tho prize-win-ners were Mrs J. S. Simpson and Mr H. Benny. After had been served the usual dance was held with Mr E. ■Wall supplying the music. Mrs v>. Greenslade contributed extras. Mr *<• Xeale was M.C. BROOMFIELD. At a dance held recently at Broomfield, the aggregate prizes for the season in connexion with the euchre parties,, were presented to Miss E. Hunter and Mr G. White, of Amberley. On Friday evening a special euchre party and dauec was organised by the School Committee. Prizes for the euchre were given by Mr and Mrs Collie, of Waipara, Miss K. Petrie and Mr C. Wilson winning the first prizes, and Miss F. Feathery and Mr E. Kickcrby, both of Amberley, annexed the mystery prizes. Supper was dispensed at the conclusion of the cards, then dancing was indulged iu till the early hours to music supplied by Mrs Ferguson, and Mr Hall (viobn and piano). Prizes for a Monte Carlo dance were presented by Mis 3 A. Moekctt, aud were won by, Miss K. Wornall and Mr P. Rome. The school com-, mittee presented prizes for a lucky spot dance, Miss E. Wornall and Mr F. Clrnnock being the winners. Mr S. Woruall was M.C.
DARFIELD. The Darfield Amateur Athletic Club held their annual meeting in the Memorial Hall, Mr F. J. Narbey presiding. Mr E. F. Wilde submitted the balance-sheet, which disclosed a debit balance of £1 6s lid. In the adverse circumstances in which the sports meeting was held the members considered the financial state of affairs satisfactory.' It was decided to hold this year's meeting o,n Boxing Day, as it was the most suitable day for all concerned.* A motion of sympathy with.; the relatives of the late Mrs Summerville and Mr Otten was passed in sil-; once.
