SPORTING.
TURF GOSSIP. J. H. Prosser has sold Goldspiuner to is Rnkaia sportsman. The sale was effected to make room for two three-ycar-cids. One is by Solferino and the other Ly Night Haul. The following re-handicaps liavo b'y.-n declared for the Waikato Hunt Meeting to-day :—Hunters' Hurdles: I'ouri 51b, nov list, Bruntwood n«ck. Handicap: Bra-son 51b, 10st: Members' Memorial Handicap: Mint Leaf 01b, 7-10: Valkon 31b. 7-7; Hunt Oup: FrUo Jack 21b, 11-'-'; Bardowie Hack Handicap: Karakul 1011), 9-3. The injuries F. 11. Jones received at liii: Dunedin J.C. Meeting arc not yielding to treatment us was expected, and as :i result, lie will not be able to ride ;it Kaiigiora to-day. As Joucs will not be iible to ride. Football may not take Lis place in the Cup field. Court Jester has been operated on for a minor ailment to his head and although the trouble is not of a serious nature" it will keep him out of commission for a few weeks. I. Tilson had his hand X-rayed last week and it was discovered that he had a tmall bone broken. This was the remit of a fall at the D.J.C. Meeting. Tilson will be able to ride at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting next month.
Centrepiece is making a good recovery from his recent ailments and is doing regular exercise on the training tracks. It was intended to raco Bailiff at the Rangiora Meeting, but he has been showing slight signs of soreness and it was deemed advisable to relievo him of his engagement. Magna Charta, who has been on the easy list for a week or two, owing to being slightly amiss, is being indulged in light exercise again. His trainer is hopeful that the trouble will sooii wear off. Sunny Loch has been fired, and is on an extended holiday. The Sunny Lake gelding was an adopt at crossing hurdles and it was unfortunate he did not stand up to a preparation as he would have boon hard to beat in hurdlo events at the Cup fixture. F D. Jones with Limerick and H. Nurse with Rapier will entrain their horses for Wellington immediately after the Champion Plato at Trentham today to catch to-night's steamer. Rapier will be a certain starter at Motukarara on Saturday next. Shortly after tho dispatch of the field for the First Hurdlo Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, Tarleton, who started from 'the outside, was brought towards the rails, and joinod Panorama in the lead. He appeared to interfcro with a bunch behind him, one of whom, Vexatious, fell. An enquiry was instituted after the raco, and as a result It. McSeveny, rider of Tarleton, was suspended for tho remainder of the Meeting. The 'evidence of P. Mcßrearty, tendered at the enquiry, was deemed unsatisfactory, and the stewards considered that ho had not given them the assistance they wero entitled to ex : poet, but in his case no further action was taken. Koauau's victory afc Trentham on Saturday was the first he has recorded since December of last year.
Silver Rule is a splendid type of galloper, and her long striding action forecasts a good future for her. Tho two-year-old Royal Duko had shown a lot of speed on the track at Trentham, but was neglected by the public for his raco on Saturday. He ■was purchased as a yearling by his trainer, H. B. Lorigan, for 320 guineas, on behalf of his present owner. He was bred by Mr A. J. Toxward, and is a half-brother to Lady Lois, Tuahine, Nucleus, and Tho Fos. Full Feather ran very green in his first essay on Saturday at Trentham. Owing to suffering from a.cold a few weeks backj ho has not had the opportunities enjoyed by Childsplay, and in consequence he was unable to hold his own with the more experienced opposition lie met Next autumn should see him a worthy representative of the stable.
Mr W. T. Haaktt was represented in the- Two-year-old Handicap at the Wellington Meeting on Saturday by Bridget, sister to Father O'Flynn, and by Flicker, a filly by Paper Money from Illume, half-sister to Gold Light. Tho pair were abreast in tho lead for most of the journey, and the latter, who is on tho small side, was responsible for a determined finishing effort. Beacon Light disappointed many on Saturday Ho was produced in good order, ana was considered tho best of propositions for the Wninui Handicap, but ho finished outsido tho placed horses. >
Gold Mint had aver £250 invested on him in his raco at Trenthaan' on Saturday, but his backers were again .disappointed. Ho ran a fair race, however, and there wero many more behind than in front of him at the finish.
Silver Coot and Paper Boy both ran Rood races at Trentham on Saturday, especially in view of their having had no racing this season to assist them in competing against their more seasoned opposition. Both would have been great propositions if they had had an outing or two prior to the Meeting.
Limerick and Rapier galloped a mite on tho Trentham track yesterday, the trial having been arranged to ascertain whother the former was in a satisfactory condition to contest the Champion Plate to-day. With T. Tito and, A. Eastwood in the saddles respectively, Rapier was receiving an advantage of well over a stone in weight, and-al-though the pair finished together, it was generally considered that Rapier ■was going the better at the finish. The gallop, nevertheless, satisfied F. D. Jones, and the gelding is a certain starter to-day. R-apier will also go to the post, but up to last night no rider had been secured for him.
There was a generous demonstration by the public when Childsplay returned to the enclosure alter her impressive win in the Wellcsley Stakes on Saturday. Her performance was full of merit, as she was iuterferred with at the rise of the barrier, and gave Endorse a good broak over the first iuriong. When she got into her stride, however, she quickly made up leeway, and as soon as she tackled Endorse the tatter compounded. Prince Humphrey, claimed as the best of the North Island youngsters, made a determined effort to overhaul Childsplay in the run home, but, confidently handled by C. Emerson, th.e Chokeboro lilly recorded a comparatively easy victory. The time, l.Oj, was easily a record for the event since the distance was changed to five furlongs in 1922,* and Childsplay has thus established new figures in her first two races. Sir George Clifford won the classic on four previous occasions, as follows; 1903 Treadmill, 1905 Kirriemuir, 1907 llectfoot. 1010 Moorfowl. Childsplay will now be a staunch favourite for tho "Welcome Stakes, and if she should prevail she will equal the performance of Moorfowl, who won the event following her "Wellington successes in 1919. Star Stranger finished like the proverbial train in the Wellington Handienp on Saturday, and tho first prize would have been his in another few ittrides. The effort will bring him into further favour for the New Zealand Onp.
Bcnnance was responsible for a solid race in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday, and was only deprived of .second money by the narrowest of margins. He is to fulfil his New Zealand Cup engagement, and will be brought south on Wednesday with Luke Wilson's two classics candidates, Raasav and Ganymede. J. Barry has been engaged to ride Bcnnance, who. on breeding and race and track indications, promises to develop into a profitable stake-earner in distance events.
Yoma will cany a heap of Taranaki support for the New Zealand Cup, in which ho will l>e ridden by A. MeCormac.
Roval Game ran a fair raco in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday, but was not dangerous over the last couple of furlongs. He has been a eon.sis.tent galloper, but he does not appeal as a New Zealand Cup proposition. He is certain, however, to face the starter.
David Garrick carried good support in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday, but. although prominent in the early part, he was not on deck at the finish.
Row a New Zealand Cup acceptor, was Tiinoiigst the unplaced division in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday. Endorse, by Paper Money from Epitaph, showed the family speed when she hopped out of the barrier in the Welleslev Stakes on Saturday, but Childsplav did not allow her to keep her lead for long. Endorse ran a good third in the Gimcrack Stakes at the recent Randwick Meeting, and, taking her form as a guide, it points to the New Zealand two-year-olds being superior to the Australian brigade. Of the field seen out at Trentham, outside of Childsplav and Prince Humphrey, the future prospects of Tea Miss, by Tea Trav from Miss Gyrons, and Raasay, half-brother by Lord Quex to Runnymede, can be viewed in a favourable light.
Booster acted as pacemaker for threeparts of the journey in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, but tired over the business stages. He should be a different horse to-day. Grand Knight again let his supporters down at Trentham on Saturday, and on his form in the Shorts Handicap he does not threaten danger in today's Champion Plate. Sky Quest ran quite a good race in the October Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, and will attract attention in to-day's engagement. Taking the form of Silver Coot and Paper Boy on tho first day at Wellington as a guide, Don Jose should break the ice for the stable in the Spring Trial Stakes to-day. He has had the benefit of two races this season, and has given better track displays than those of his two stablemates.
Tarleton did not jump one fence correctly at Trentham on Saturday, and his four legs bore evidence of their contact with the strongly-built obstacles. Ho will be ridden by P. McBrearty to-day. Pure Gold, Doree, Second Wind, and Gascony will comprise Mr T. H. Lowry's team for . Riccarton. The first-named, by Psychology from Desert Gold, did not race at the Wellington Meeting
Light rain fell at Trentham on Saturday night, and again yesterday, but as the track was unusually dry, the change would he more appreciated than otherwise.
With one exception largo acceptances have been received for tho second day of the Wellington Meeting, which takes place to-day. Tarleton should be seen to better advantage over a mile and a half in the second hurdle race.' He covered a lot of unnecessary ground on Saturday, and was never able to settlo down to his task properly. If his. jumping improves he should not be troubled by the moderate company he will meet. Koauau and Brigadier Bill will again be prominent. Cornstalk was one / of the first out from tho barrier on Saturday, but later lost bis position, eventually finishing close up to tho placed horses. He will give a hotter display to-day, and indications suggest his being a likely proposition over a mile in the Tararua Handicap. Kilmoyler and Rowley will also be in demand.
No fower than twenty two-year-olds figure in the Roseneath Handicap, and form points to Prince Humphrey adding to his record. Silver Rule, Royal Duke, and Raasay read the best of the remainder.
Tho Spring Trial Stakes should provide an interesting contest, and a trio likely to supply the placed division are Ring Boy, Don Jose, and Mandarine.
If the track remains firm,,Bennanee must be given every chance in the earce Handicap, as he was always in the picture in tho big race on Saturday. Royal Game and Cerf will also run well.
The day's feature will bo the appearance of Limerick in' the Champion Plata. He gave ©very satisfaction in his special gallop yesterday, and Jones considers he will gs to the post almost at his best. He will havo plenty of opposition to keep him busy, but if lie reproduces anything suggestive of his Australian performances over a mile and a quarter, he should add) another classic to his credit. If Laughing Prince has any credentials to Derby honours, he should bo in the place money, but the candidate most likely to follow tho champion home is Rapier, who is always a hard proposition over the distance. However, it is hard to go past Limerick, but if he is not himself his defeat might be brought about by Rapier. The Nai Nai Handicap has only attracted five acceptors, a most unusual happening for this class of event at Trentham. Shirley will be favourite, but she will have to improve on Saturday's running to beat Booster, who will be a much improved horse to-day. The Meeting will conclude with the Ruahine Handicap, and a big field will «xo to tho post. Saturday's winner, Ti Tree, will have plenty of support, while the prospects of Paper Boy and Duke Abbey will bo favourably considered. ' Mr B. N. Sandilands, president of the Feilding Jockey Club, has been appointed! stipendiary steward to the New Zealand Racing Conference, filling the vacancv caused bv the resignation of Mr McMtfhon. He commences his duties on November Ist.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. A strong nor'-west wind was blowing at Eiccarton on Saturday morning and horses galloping over short courses were assisted in times registered. As a result of the wind, some fast times wero recorded, which could not be taken as a reliable guide as to the horses' ability.
The plough and the No. & grass track were both at the disposal of trainers, but the former was the most in demand. ~ Two two-vcar-olds in Jones s stable, bv Red tern "and Paladin, were tho first out, and thev pleased by the way they ran down three furlongs. It is probable that both will be seen out in the two-year-old events at the Cup Meeting next month. . ~ Paperchasc. looking bright and well, was stenped out to run over a imlc, a task 'she accomplished in 1.43 --o. She was stopping a bit at the iinisii. Footfall, who continues to tram on satisfactorily, was subjected to aw* in" callop over a mile and a halt. Ihe firstj. named is engaged in the High Weight Handicap at Rangiora to-day and will be anion" the most fancied candidates. Martarma, with a stable-mate as a companion over a part of the ]<"»•"«•?' reeled off six furlongs in 1.10 2-o. lhe Martian tluiec-iyear-old is none the worse for his exertions at tho D..J.U Meeting, and promises to race well the next time he faces the starter. Sudden Storm, with Centrepiece as a companion over tho last part of the iournev, ran live furlongs m 1.4. Centrepiece pulled up all right and there appears to lie every chance of him standing a preparation, hut lie cannot be at liis best for the Cup Meeting. Piuthair and Clarinda, who arrived at Riccarton during the week, . are regular attendants on the training tracks. The former is looking especially well and is likely to be seen to advantage during the, Cup Meeting at Riccarton. . . Money Order gave a pleasing display over six furlongs. His time for the last, five furlongs being 1.2. With a race to-dav, he should he in first-class order for more important events at.Riccar- ■ ton next month. Count Cavour was responsible for an attractive performance when he negotiated nine furlongs in 1.5 G. He had Satrap as a companion over the last seven furlongs and both horses, travelled with plenty of freedom and were going on nicely as they crossed the line. The Count proved by his effort that there is little wrong with I liis condition, and ho will he a tit horse for his engagements next month.
TROTTING NOTES. The Greymouth Trotting Club received something of a setback when it was forced to postpone the opening of it* Spring Meeting from Saturday until to-day. The club seems to have been the victim of adverse circumstances, for the weather, which has been exceptionally fine for the past few weeks, became atrocious. From the special tram which travelled on ' Friday passengers were given an insight into a'-■proper West Coast flood. The-Grey River was running high and the Ouioto racecourse, which is passed on the way to Greymouth, was only recognised by the rails, which showed just above the water, and the grandstand surrounded by a sheet of water. However, as showing just how fortunate the trotting club is in the matter of its track, it need only be mentioned, that after rain had fallen all day on Friday and up tilL 1 o'clock on Saturday, the track at 4 o'clock provided good going excepting for otio patch down the hack break.
At Victoria Park yesterday morning a lot of work was done and a crowd of from fwe to six hundred people gathered to watch the- visiting and local horses.
Cardinal Logan, Peter Biagen, Great Hopo, and Acron were watched with interest, and all did usoful work, being allowed to sprint a couple of furlongs several times.
The Groymouth Handicap is going to lie a most" exciting race, although there will be only five starters and one dividend.
WORK AT ADDINGTON. The track at Addington was in splendid ordor for training work on Saturday morning, but a stiff nor'-wester that sprang up after 9.30 made conditions unpleasant, and also made fast times impossible. Bridget Galindo, who was brought homo by Marlindo over the last three furlongs, covered a mile in good time. Logan Park covered one mile and a half, going very freely. Randolph was given several sprinting tasks, and showed all his old pace. Doctor Dillon had Routine as a companion when covering a useful mile. Airman, who looks well, covered a mile and a quarter very well. N. Price had Nicora, Bingen Patch, and Kola Boy over from Sockbarn. Lady Embrace and Little Logan were associated in a fast work-out over a mile. Exclusive, ia saddle, worked a mile fast and well. Kiowa went about a mile, going very nicely. Nelson's Request -Jind Wenlo worked together over a mile. The best performance of the morning was a work out over a mile and a half by Locanda Mac, St. Maura, Kola Boy, and Logan Holme. The start from the winning post was a very uneven one, Logan Holme breaking away over a length in front' of Kola Boy, with Locanda Mac two lengths bauk from Kola Boy, and St. Maura fully three lengths back from Locnnda Mac. Kola Boy joined Logan' Holme at the two mile post, where they were many lengths ahead of St. Maura. Racing together past the mile post (1.6 2-5), the leading pair still had a good break on Loeanda Mac and St. Maura, as the first round was covered, but running past the 2 mile (2.15) Locanda Mac and St. Maura were right up with them. Before reaching the mile post, Kola Boy was eased off, and St. Maura shot to the front, with Locanda Mac well on the outer coming fast. In the run home St. Maura beat Locanda Mae by about two lengths, with Logan Holme four lengths further away, the full distance taking 3.21. Locanda Mac pulled up very well.

Neither, however, participated in the prize money, the winner being the aged All Red gelding Koauau, who took charge at the far turn from Peshwa, Brigadier Bill, and Anchor, and. leading over the last fence, won in comfortable fashion by three lengths from Brigadier Bill, with Peshwa. who petered out in tho run home, six lengths away third. Anchor was a moderate fourth, and then came Matu and Tarleton. Vexatious fell on the Hat approaching the initial hurdle. Tarleton lo>t ground at each fence, but held his owu on thi flat. He madt a forward move on the r.iils approaching the last fence, but screwed badly, and lost any chance he possessed of (raining a place. Brigadier Bill finished very strongly, but had too much ground to mako up in the run home. The favourite occupied a berth behind the leaders throughout, but never really threatened danger. A Close Finish. The Taita Handicap provided a field of eighteen two-year-olds, Silver Rule, the daughter of Silver Link, bein? made a staunch favourite, with the Lowry representative, Second Wind, next in demand. The first to show in front from the start were Mr Hazlett's pair. Bridget and Flicker, but as the run home was commenced Silver Rule held an advantage from thera, with Royal Duke close in behind. The favourite was well clear inside the distance, and appearod to have the race in hand, but Royal Duke finished with a great burst of speed and caught Silver Rule on the post, gaining the judge's verdict by a head. Flicker was vigorously ridden to secure third money, a length away, and the next to finish were Stag-Hunter. Bridget, and Briar Root. AjrreeI able, one of the Kemball bracket, failed to 1 Jeavo tb.e barrier.
Doree Prevails. Hova! Game. Nippy, Vesporns, Cosmetic, Willow Wai, and Pantagruel were withdrawn from the Wainui Handicap, for which Beacon Light was made a pronounced favourite. From a good start Doree was the first to break the line, from Cerf and Damaris, but at the far turn Doree lost her position, and Damars took charge from Tiega, Orazone, and Beacon Light. This was the order as the straight was reached, and an interesting finish was witnossed. Damaris was collared bv Doree inside the distance, and, finishing rosolutclv. Doree won by a length from Vcrtigern, who was a length in front of Cerf, Pamaris, and Tiega, this trio crossing tho line practically abreast, just in front of Beacon Light. The winner's performance was a good one, aB, after being steadied from the leading position five furlongs from homo, she outclassed the opposition over tho concluding stages. Beacon Light had every chance in the run home, but failed to finish on. and it was evident he was short of a gallop. Another Outsider. Twenty-one paraded for the 'Rimutaka Handicap, the defections being Reckless, Limosa Lin Arlington, Glengassy, and Gourmet. The' race provod a fairly comfortable victory for Kilmovler, who hit the front when the field settled down, and lod into the straight clear of Tone, Wanderlust, King Midas, Cornstalk Priceless, and Bing Boy. Kilmoyler was 'still in front of a bunch inside the distance, and, throwing off all challenges, won by half a from Wnndcrltißt, who was a similar distance in front of Bing Bov Rowlev was a length away next, followed by La'dvkiller, Nadarino, Twink, and Tone The favourite, Vigilance, was never prominent, while the second choice, Cornstalk finished in tho ruck. The winner was 'formerly trained by the lato J. H. Pro=ser, and is now in tho handa of that mcutor''s son, D. Prosscr, at Porirua. Toma, Impresses. The public were again astray in selecting the winner of the Wellington Handicap, for which Star Stranger carried a quartor of the machine total, and over twice as much as was invested on the second choice, Nippy. As the field passed tho stand the first time, Ronex showed out from Mask, David Garrick, Roval Game, and Star Stranger, but along tho back David Garrick joined Rouex, and this pair piloted tho remainder of the field, headed by Bennanee, Royal Game, Yoma, and Star Stranger. The last-named fell back rounding the home turn, and as the straight was reached Rouex had charge from Yoma, Beunaneo, Royal Game, Mask, and Novar. In aa interesting finish Yoma, wide out, gained tho verdict by half a length from Star Stranger, who came through tho fiold over tho last furlong, and out Bennanee out of second money in the last stride. 'Rouex, who tired in the straight, was a close fourth, and then came Nippy, Tresham, and David Garrick. The Undoubted Champion. Tho Wellesloy Stakes created much interest, and over £6OOO passed through tho machine. Childsplay, Prince Humphrey, and Endorso attracted most support, the flrstnumed carrying over 800 tickets more than wore entrusted to Prince Humphrey, whoso figures were 100 ahead of those on Endorse. First Ruler failed to hop out at the start, from which Endorse was the first to show out. Tho favourite was interfered with svhen the tapes were released, but soon found her feet, and as tho run home was commenced was in second berth, behind Endorse, with Prince Humphrey and High Disdain at the head of the remainder. The favourite joined Endorse at tho falso rail, nnd the latter cried "content." leaving Childsplay with <i four lengths* advantage < from Princo Humphrey »t th.« distanco post, with Endorse, Tea Miss, and Knightlike next. Princo Humphrey made a determined effort nearing the post, but Childsplay was not to be denied, and won in an attractive manner' by a length. Tea Miss finished on the best of tho others, and gained third money, four lengths from Princo Humphrey. Endorso was a moderate fourth, and next to finish were High Disdain, Baasay, Knightlike, and Banket. Shot Silk ran wide at the bend entering the straight, and nnisned well back. ' Public Still ABtray. Another big dividend was recorded as tho rcsnlt of the Shorts Handicap, Benzora puting in a belated run in tho concluding stages to gain the honours by half a length from another outsider in To Monanui, who also came from a long way back. Booßtor and Gascony were in tho van at the entrance to tho course proper, but ns tho run 'homo was commenced Joy King had a slight ad-, vantage from Booster, , Lysander, Gascony, and Royal Ceres. The finish appeared to rest between this quintet, but Benzora and Te Monanui both put in their claims nearing tho post, and the result was as stated above. Joy King was half a length away in third position, and then followed Booster, Kilbronsyth, Lysandor, Silver Coot, Gascony, Royal Ceres, and Lausanne. A Second Favourite. Duke Abbey was made a firm favourite for the concluding event, the October Handicap, but although he was prominent from tho dispatch until the course proper was reached, ho failed to take part in the final issue. He lost his position in the run home, whore Ti Tree assumed command, and went on to win comfortably by throe lengths from Kcddar, who was always her nearest attendant. Over the last two furlongs Paper Boy finished fast from tho middle of the field, and gained third money, I two lengths away from Keddar. The next to finish were Oscillation, Mani, Sky Quest, and Fee Simple.
