The funeral of the late Mrs Ethel Alington (Pearl) McCoy, wife of Mr AV. McCoy, Beckenham, was held yesterday afternoon, the Rev. Canon Mutter conducting the last rites at Bromley Cemetery. The chief mourners were Messrs W. McCoy, W. H. Turner, and P. A. Turner. Many members of the R.S.A. and the Mayor attended.
In appreciation of their services, Misses E. M. Herriott and F. Murray were entertained at afternoon tea at Canterbury College yesterday bv the advanced and honours Botany students, on behalf of whom Mr H. Gourlav made them small presentations.

On Thursday evening Miss Beryl Rose was .hostess at a pleasant little party given in honour of Miss Winnie t.reig, whose marriage takes place shortly. On Tuesday evening an enjoyable time.was. spent at the home of Mr and Mrs Lucas, Hillsborough, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their • eldtest daughter, Eva. Godby the well-known Shirley player, who is also the champion of the Harewood Club, reached the. senu-hnal, where.she was beaten by Miss Gambrill, who proved the winner of the championship. Describing Mrs Godby. s play the "Dominion," under =the heading '"Brilliant Putting AVins, ' says:— "Brillant work-on the greens gave Mrs Godbv the honour in her game with Miss'Kav. In her long game, the play of Miss Kay was all that could be desired, faulty putting being responsible, for her defeat. Throughout the first round Mrs Godby never missed a holeable putt, and she, herself, declared she had excelled herself at putting and had never made a better. showing on the greens before. Mrs Godby had a keen tussle with Mrs Shailer Weston in her afternoon round. She was playing as effectively on the greens as she was in the morning,'and going to the eighteenth the game was.square. Mrs "Godbv sank a, good putt at the last hole 'and won the match 1 up.
TENNIS DANCE. To celebrate the opening of the. season, the Spreydon Lawn Tennis Club held a delightful dance in the Coronation Hall, Spreydon. The committee, consisting of Mesdames Moore, Nolan, and Dickie, Misses Dunkley, Searing. Graham, A. Bowcs, V. Bowes, Messrs It. T. Cowpcr and A. R. Merrett had worked very hard to make the evening the success it was. The hall was prettily decorated with greenery, flowers, and balloons. A meeting of the Christchurch Girls' Sports' Day Committee was held in the Y.AV.C.A. on Thursday. There were present representatives from Suckling Bros., Petone, Crown Clothing Co., Avonside Girls' Club, Spreydbn Girls' Bible Class, Graham, Wilson, and Smellie, Linwood Girl* Guides, .. Strange and Co., Coulls, Somerville, and AVilkie, Lane, Walker, and'Rudkin's, D.1.C., School for the Deaf, Armstrong's, Girl Citizens/ Wilkinson and Andrew, Bunting's, Hutchison • and Co., Aulsebrook's,; and Opawa Bible Class.. It was reported that a cup had been bought as an inter-house trophy, and will be displayed in the window of the Sports Depot, together with the Rotary Club Challenge Cup, next week. • The programmes nad been. printed and were ready for distribution. ' Owing to the number of the events ' competitors were asked \to be punctual, and to attend a rehearsal on the previous Thursday, when their positions on the grounds would be given them. The. actual arrangements of the courses had been undertaken by the N.Z.A.A.A., and Mr Thomas and several other members had kindly agreed to act as officials, on the day. Further activities in connexion witli the sports teams were suggested, and a banquet on - November 14th was agreed upon as a preliminary reunion. The practice in Latimer in Sydenham Park had been so much enjoyed by large groups of girls that they wish'to continue similar outdoor I amusements, and suggestions for rowing clubs audi swimming, clubs were received with approval. Brown, on behalf of the members, presented a silver entree dish - to Miss Ruby McGrath, who is to be married shortly. A member of.the club for ten years and vice-«aptain , for five years, Miss McGrath is held in high esteem. She was the recipient also of many per-, sonal gifts from her club-mates. A presentation' was made to Miss C. J. Couzins, a member of the club for seventeen years and honorary treasurer for seven years.- Miss Couzins, owing to sickness in her home, has been reluctantly compelled! to /give up her official position, and the members presented her -with a wristlet watch as a small token of esr teem and appreciation of her,past services. . Keen disappointment was expressed at 'the inabinty : to form a Y Union in Riccarton. Correspondence was read relating to a whom the Union had assisted, and members were pleased to know that the prisoner, now resident in England, was making good. Mrs Field wrote expressing regret at being unable to take the devotional exercises for the Union. Being cradle roll day, Nurse Allen, of the Christchurch Plunket Society, addressed the meeting and gave an interesting talk to the young mothers present on the care and feeding' of'babies. Afternoon tea was dispensed and a collection taken up for the work among the Maoris. One new member was elected.

ST. ANDREW'S SPORTS. The students of St. Andrew's College are very fortunate in the possession of fine playing fields, bordered with flower-, ifag shrubs, that flourish luxuriantly.on the "banks of a gently flowing stream. But even the stately trees that form, a dignified back-ground for ,tho College buildings, and add to the picturesqueuess of the scene were insufficient to shelter the grounds from the piercing wind that prevailed yesterday, when the. iwiuiwl- sports were held.' ■■■-. <'■. •■■ Neve, theless,. proud'parents and-inter-ested friends attended in goodly numbers and enjoyed the day's programme.
