William Allan Pepperell, -who appeared before Mr J. Todd, J.P., yesterday, on a charge of failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife and two children, was remanded to appear at Wellington on Tuesday. Bail was allowed in' one surety of £IOO. Daylight Saving. Although it will be hailed with pleasure by the people in town, the Daylight Saving Act is not being favourably anticipated by country people. ' The opinion has - been expressed that standard time will still be observed in the country when the Act is enforced next month, excepting when it is absolutely necessary to abide by the new regulations. Outbreak of-Fire."."" Fire broke out in a washhbuse at fhe rear of a house at 37 le Cren street yesterday afternoon, but neighbours, extinguished the blaze before the arrival of the fire brigade. Eecentlv a match was fired between teams .representing the Fire brigade and the Eifle Club. After an interesting night's shooting the Eifle Club team won by a small margin. Obituary. j Another of the early Canterbury pioneers, Mrs W. T. Chapman, V******™* 'recently, at the residence of ter, Mrs J. E. Scott, Sherwood Downs Fairlie. The deceased was in her 86th ; year. = Born at Belfast, Ireland, in 1342, she came to New Zealand in 1864. In 1867 her marriage took place *ith Mr W.-T, Chapman at the Church o! Eng land.Geraldine. Her husband pre-de ceased her by 15 years. Mackenzie Collie Club. At a meeting of. the Collie. Club, the balance-sheet showed accredit on last year's operations, in spite of the very •favourable weather experienced for the annual competitions. Votes ot thanks were accorded Messrs C. At the annual meeting, of the Orari and district Presbyterian Church the Rev. H; D. Madill (Geraldine) presided over a good attendance. The session report showed a year of progress, ! a Sunday School had been built at Arundel, a large sum had been raised for mission work, and all other activities •of the church were in a healthy condition. During the year Mr had resigned the charge, and his place was taken by Mr R. Taylor. Wilson (Winchester), who has been under a serious operation in a private hospital, Timaru, returned to his home on Wednesday. Mr E. Langford (Winchester), has gone on a visit to her mother, Mrs D. McCas- I kill, Timaru. Mr S. H. Maddren (Christchurch), who has been staying with his brother, Mr R. Maddren (Winchester), went on to Invercargiil during the week. RANGITATA. The annual wind-up.social and! dance of the Rangitata Rifle Club attracted a large attendance of members and friends. Mr Gresham, who presented the prizes and trophies, congratulated the club on its work for the season. The captain, Mr J. O'Regan, thanked those who had assisted with prizes and trophies, and also the ladies who had so generously catered for the *club during the season.
