The Wellington Racing Club's Spring Mooting will open to-day, and tho Wnikato Racing Club will conclude its fixture. On Monday (Labour Day; race meetings will be held at Wellington, Rangiora, Waikato Hunt, Gore, "VVaverloy, and Waipawa. Uiccarton stables will be represented .-a the Wellington Meeting to-day by Tu|rletoii, Vull Feather. Gold Mint, Cornstalk, Childsplay, Booster, Silver Coot, Paper Boy, and Sky Quest. Don Jo»o accompanied G. J. Pine's team to Trenthani, but will not be raced until the second day. An improvement on his Dunodin running can be expected on a firm track.

F. E. Jones was out for the first time yesterday since his accident at Wingatui last week, but his injured foot is still causing trouble, and it is doubtful if ho will be fit enough to carry out his riding engagements at Ilangiora. Gold Mint will be given an opportunity to make amends for previous disappointments when he contests the Wainui Handicap at Trentham to-rlay. He will bo riddeii by A. Eastwood, and with 7-7 on his back, has only to run up to track form to take part in the final issue. He has performed well on the track before, registering a close second to Black Mint over seven furlongs in January last. Clubs with classic races on their programmes often experience a period of lean or uninteresting years, especially when one of the competitors has established a clear-ut superiority. The Wellesley Stakes fields for the last few seasons have been easy problems to solve by virtue of the outstanding form of the winner, and the competition has not been particularly keen. To-day's contest, however, sees a welcome change, and it is exciting the keenest interest that has been shown in this particular event for some years. Five winners are represented in the ''eld as well as place-getters, and particular attention is drawn to the race by reason of North Island form meeting South for the first time, with the addition of competition from Endorse, who ran third in the Australian Jockey Club's Gimcrack Stakes. The relative value of the form is now the subject of the liveliest speculation, not only amongst the general run of racegoers, hut amongst owners and breeders, and today's race promises to be one of the best in the history of the Wellesley Stakes. It certainly appears ns if it is going to take some winning this year. A Melbourne message says that Pentagram, owned by Mr C. Dawson, of Auokland, who was injured! when he fell at Caulfield, has been destroyed.

TROTTING NOTES. Th« first race at Greypiouth to-day ii timed to start at 12.10 p.m. The weather in Greypiouth for the last few days has been anything but good, and a great deal of rain has fallen. Late last evening matters looked a good deal more promising, and with ' ordinary luck the Greymouth Trotting Club should have fine weather .and first class racing. With the amount of rain that has fallen most courses would be ' little more tljan quagmires, but so effective is the natural drainage at Victoria Park that an hour's sunshine will put it in first class order. The Greymouth Handicap was robbed of a good deal of interest when Great Bingen and Prince Pointer failed to make the final acceptance, and ag neithelr Logan Chief nor Logan Holme was brought from Christchurch the size of the field is likely to be still further reduced. Peter Bingen and Great Hope are the popular fancies for the race. At the last moment, B. Jarden was robbed of the services of Baunui. for though she worked alright on Thursday, she was decidedly sore yesterday morning, and as she will be required to race at Addington next month, Jarden was not prepared to take any risks with her. In consequence, Acre will be the stable's w>le representative at Greymouth. Jarden, whose luck pf late has not been good,.is seriously thinking of transferring to West Australia, where his services should be in great demand. Mr J. R. McKenaie was unfortunate enough to meet with a slight accident io a Knee whfle at Hanmer the other day, and w will not be a visitor to the Greymouth Meeting. It is reported that L. Frost has been engaged to drive Loganwood in tbo New Zealand Oup. ■ The following penalties have been incurred for the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan T.C.'s Spring Meeting :—Victoria Handieap, William the Great 24yds; Empire Handicap: William the Great 12yds: Hagley Handicap: Tom Thumb 12yds.

WELLINGTON R.C. TO-DAY'S RACES. The interest of racegoers throughout New Zealand will be centred in the opening of the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, which takes place at Trenthani to-day. Latest reports from Trentham state that unless the weather changes in the meantime the track will be firm, and some fast times should be recorded. The day's programme is as follows: — FIRST HURDLE HANDICAP, o£ 050 sovs.

Tarleton will make his third appearance over sticks in this event. He has (lone well since the Geraldinc Meeting, and has onlv to jump the Trentham fences proficiently to be on hand at the finish. With Anchor, he is likely to be in most demand. TAITA HANDICAP, of 260 sovs. For two-year-olds, of.

A number of inexperienced two-year-olds figure in the above. Silver Rule, the boh bv Chief Ruler of that speedy performer Silver Link, has a win to his credit, while Second Wind (Grandcourt —First Blow), one of the Lowry string, showed promise in the three races he has contested. The Chokebore stable will be represented by Full Feather (Autumnus —Equipment), halfbrother to Centrepiece, who gives promise of developing into a good stake-enrner later in his career, as he is built on solid lines, and is not so far advanced as his track companion Childsplay. The race will evoke plenty of interest, and with recent form as n guide, Silver Rule, Second /Wind, and Tea Doll appear to possess possibilities. WAINUI HANDICAP, of 400 sovs. lm.^

| A strong field is engaged in this race, and provided racing and travelling have not found a weak spot in Royal Gamp, ho cannot be left out of calculations. The opposition, however, is more select than he encountered in the south, including classic winners in Damaris and Doree, who will be responsible for a fast-run race. Beacon Light has not had a run since the Wanganui Meeting, but if produced in good order ho will be the public choice. The Chokehare cast-off Vesperus has run some good races at Trentham, and on Carterton form he will be in the picture. To sum up a very open contest, a trio to appeal comprise Tiega, Veaperus, and Royal Game. RIMDTAKA HANDICAP, of 260 sovs. 7f.

Investors will have n difficult problem to solve in this race, and .there is a set o£ circumstances to contend with in a field of this size. Rowley has apparently struck a winning vein, and the same remark applies to Cornstalk, who is a quick beginner, and may escape the trouble usually experienced in the early part of such a race. There is a lot of recent form to recommend fifty per cent, of the contestants, but to name the most favourable proposition one is inclinod I to suggest Cornstalk, Rowley, and Vigilance. I WELLINGTON HANDICAP, of 750 sovs.

The withdrawal of Rapier from the Wellington Handicap will he disappointing to many, as he was one of the public fancies. There is plenty of solid material carded to test the judgment of the most ardent race follower, and the appearance of Star Strangor will create interest, especially in view of his engagements to follow. On their Auckland dead heat, the Martian gelding and Mask have the best credentials, and it will probably be found that they will head the quotations. Bennanee will also carry strong support, as he is a proved galloper on a firm track, and has shown indications of being able to cover a distance of ground. WELLESLEY STAKES, of 1000 sovs. For two-year-olds. sf. Sir George Clifford's f Childsplay. G. M. Currie's f Episode. W. McA. Duncan's g Freehold. P. S. Easton's f Moutoa Treasury. Captain B. H. A. B. "Williams's c Knightlike. J. 9. McLeod's c R&asay. The lonjj-<Wtablish.ed two-year-old classic will create Ctfdespread interest, tbe field containing the best of the brigade seen out in both Islands so im this season. On her convincing, victory at Dunedin, Childsplay will carry a large following, as she is a smart beginner, and possesses a marked turn of speed. She will, of course, meet other proved gallopers in Prince Humphrey, Freehold, Knightlike, Endorse, and Raasay, but is likely to cause them anxiety over the deciding stages. It is bordering on impertinence to suggest likely place-getters in such a high-class representation of the Dominion's youngsters, but Childsplay can be depended upon to make a most interesting contest with Prince Humphrey and Endorse. SHORTS HANDICAP, of 400 sovs. 6f.

Booster showed by his surprise win / at Geraldine that a good race is always concealed about his make-up when properly well. He has won at Trentliam before, and with his handy impost to-day he will again be prominent. Grand Knight and Shirley will probably assist in the finish. OCTOBER HANDICAP, of 260 sovs. 6f.

The lucfi of the draw will play an important part in the concluding event, as the largest field of the day will line up at the barrier. Duke Abbey, Arch Arrow, and Imitation will attract attention.
