ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Mr W. Campbell, Racecourse road., is leaving at the end of the month on an extended visit to England and Europe. Enquiries made at the County Hospital last evening elicited the information that there was a slight improvement in the condition of Mr James Cow. District Coroner, who was admitted some weeks ago suffering from a stroke. Mr E. Pcllew, of the staff of the Union Bank of Australia, left on annual leave yesterday and he is being relieved by Mr F. Pennefather, of the bank's Christchurch branch. On tho occasion of his marriage, Mr G. J. Broker, of tho staff of the Ashburton County Council, was the recipient of a wallet of notes from his fel-low-employees. The presentation was made by the County Clerk. Fire Brigade Demonstration. Members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade have been practising enthusiastically for the annual competitions to be held in tho vicinity of the fire station on Monday. The events will comprise one-man championship: one-man coupling; three-men hose and hydrant; three men hose, hydrant, and union; five-men hose, hydrant, and union, and five-men reel and ladder. Cut With An Axe. Mr E. Cartwright, a well-known local athlete, had the misfortune to inflict a gash in his right knee, with an axe, while chopping wood at Chertsey on Wednesday. He will be unable to compete on Labour Day. Rounders Competition. The second series of games in the primary schools' rounders competition was played yesterday afternoon, and as the scores indicate, tho games wero rather uninteresting. Ecsul 1 - -Allcnton 164 beat Tinwald 51; Borough 150 beat Ashburton East 01. Convent School Picnic. The annual picnic of tho Ashburton Convent and Sacred Heart Schools was held yesterday, when about 200 pupils a'- 1 friends, under the supervision of tiio Convent teachers, left for Timaru by the early morning slow train. After spending an enjoyable day on Caroline Bay, the party returned by tho evening train. Military Parado. A church parade of all military units will be held in the Baring Square Methodist Church on Sunday morning. Basketball Association. A very pleasant danco was held in tho Assembly Hall of tho Technical School on Wednesday, under the auspices of the Basketball Association to supplement the funds of the Sports Queen (Miss Aline McClurg), Mesdames E. Galbraith, and E, Buchanan acted aa chaperones. The music was supplied by Miss R. Ibell and Mr J. McCormick was M.C. 500 and Bridge Party. A 500 and bridge party, organised to augment tho funds of the Country Queen (Miss E. Brown), was held in St. Stephen's Hall on Wednesday evening, and realised about £5. The winners of the bridge prizes were: Mrs F. M. Brodie' and Mr L. A. Charles, while the 500 prizes went to Mrs H. Bell and Mr S. Elliott. Women's Missionary Union. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Branch of tho Methodist Women's Missionary Union was held on Wednesday when the president (Mrs B. Buxton) presided. Further arrangements were made in connexion with tho annual conference which meets in Wellington nest week. It was decided to invito tho conference of tho M.W.M.U. to meet in Ashburton next year. An interesting lecture on missionary work in India was given by Mrs Acntt, travelling representative of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, London.
Glass Works Machinery. Advice has been received by the secretary of the Southern Cross Glass Co., Ltd. (Mr E. W. Wade), that the first consignment of machinery will arrive in New Zealand next Thursday. It is anticipated that the works will be operating early in the new year. Farmer's Failure. An investigation into the circumstances causing the bankruptcy of Colin William Parker, a farmer of Lismore, was held before the Official Assignee (Mr C. 0. Pratt) at the Courthouse yesterday. Mr L. A. Charles represented bankrupt and Mr G. Nicoll appeared for Mr T. Bennett. The financial statement showed a deficiency of £182.1 Is Id. The only secured creditor was T. Bennett, who held a security over property and slock amounting to £7347 13- Bd, but the value of these was estimated at £SS2O, leaving a deficiency of £1327 13s Sd. The amount owing to unsecured creditors was £350, but assets were valued at £54, leaving a total deficiency of £1824 Ls Id. The bankrupt, in his sworn statement, said he took over his farm in 1020, and in 1922 arranged with Mr Thomas Bennett, of Euapuna, to finance him. In 1924 he had a bad season, and went back considerably, and in October of the same' year he owed Mr Bennett £4186 Ss 3d under his securities. Again, in 1925 he had a bad season, and only obtained 230 lambs from 3SO ewes. Since then his position gradually becar e worse and he dropped about £I4OO during the past three years. He was married with four children, and had no prospects. The Assignee said there appeared to be little hope of a dividend being paid. The meeting was adjourned to allow the Assignee to wind up the estate. Concert. A concert, to supplement the funds of the Young People's Department and to renovate the Kindergarten room of the Baring Square Methodist Church. was held on Wednesday.' The East Ashburton Children's Choir gave an enjoyable concert in the Memorial Hall on Wednesdav evening in aid of the hall fund During th- evening opportunity was taken to present Mr W. A. McDonald presided. It was agreed to close the voting at 8 p.m. on Monday, and that anv money received after that hour be devoted to the general funds. On the motion of Mr F. Pritchard it was agreed to recommend the Gala Executive that in tho event of the Gala being postponed, or a wet night, the crowning ceremony also be postponed. A crowning rehearsal is arranged to be held in St. Andrew's Hall to-morrow. Mr W. W. Garton was appointed marshal for the ceremony. Tinwald Swimming Club. The Tinwald Swimming Club held its annual meeting last evening. The annual report stated that the membership had shown an increase but it was with regret that lack of interest in the work of the club had to be reported. The balan< sheet showed a small credit balance. The committee desired to place on record its appreciation of tho -er 'ces rcndc-ed by Mr James <~->w, and sincerely hoped that he would make a speedy recoverv from his prer -it illness. METHVEN The second of a series of socials and gift afternoons in aid of the Highbank stall of the Fancy Fair was held at the residence of Mrs Fred Horsiield, Highbank. There was a large attendance of local parishioners and a large quantity of useful gifts was brought for the stalls. The afternoon was devoted to a croquet competition, which was won by Mrs F. A. Tooley. The vicar (Rev. F. A. Tooley) thanked all present for their support, and also Mr and Mrs Horsfield for their hospitality. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday. Mr W. A. Shemeld presided. The superintendent presented his report, which showed that the brigade had had one call to a fire in a dwelling. Correspondence was read from the United Volunteer Fire Brigades' Association describing benefits to be gained by affiliating with the Association. Tt was decided to affiliate and also to take out insurance cover immediately. Tfc was derided tn make a special effort to raise funds for the purchase of new hose. HINDS. There was a good attendance iu the Hinds Hal], when Mr IT. M. Jones gave a very interesting and instructive lecture on the Islands of the Pacific, illustrated by a large number of slides. Mr J. Cook manipulated the lantern. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Jones. On Wednesday afternoon a number of parishioners of Hinds assembled nf the vicarage and by dint of hard work cleaned up the paths and grounds. A number of ladies also put the finishing touches to the house, preparatory to the pected arrival of the new vicar.
