HARMLESS BEAR
CAUSES MILD ALARM. [THtf PRESS Special Service.] g AUCKLAND, October 20. Mild alarm was caused in part of the Ponsonby district this morning by a report that a bear had been at large all night, and it was feared that the animal had escaped from the Zoo. Later it transpired that the bear was of the harmless type known in Australia as tho*koala, much prized as a pet, the owner being Mrs Kadania, of Ponsonby road. In the early hours the bear was captured by a tramwayman, and was returned to its owner during the morning. Scarcely bigger than an opossum, and grey in colour, the bear is about eight years old. It has been a pet for over six years, and although it is reported to have an unpleasant way of looking at strangers, «is docile and tractable. Pond of tree climbing, with eucalyptus for preference, it has a diet principally of gum leaves, varied occasionally with a taste of sugar. In Australia, where it is a native, the koala is commonly known as a "teddy bear," and is a favourite with children.
