COMBINED PRESS V. VETERANS. A very enjoyable game was played on the Veterans' ground yesterday afiernoon between teams representative of the Combined Press and the Veterans' Club. Veterans batted first on a good wicket, but generally did not make a great deal of headway ag.iinst tbe bowling of Archer, Hartley-Smith, aud Uuiney, and were all dismissed for Hi, to which White contributed a crisply compiled ati (retired), and Butler had a good knock for 27 not. out. McMenamin was the only other double-figure scorer, with 12.\ For the newspaper men, Archer took 6 wickets and Hartley-Smith 2. The Combined Press, despite the fact that tbey batted twelve men, failed by 4 runs to reach their opponents' total, and thus suffered defeat by a small margin, after an exciting finish. .Hartley-Smith's 26 included some lusty hits, and Adams batted merrily for 12. Thomson and White bowled almost unchanged throughout the Pressmen's innings, White taking G wickets and Thomson 5.

(BY CABI.E-i'RESS ASSOCIATION-COPSBIGHT.) (AUSTRALIA:: AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received October 20th, 7.35 a.m.) LONDON, October 19. C. G. Macartney's retirement haß occasioned spontaneous expressions of regret and generous praise. Perhaps the finest tribute is contained in a "Daily Herald" editorial, which says:— ~ . ... "Thero will be world-wide regret at the departure of one of the most outstanding cricket geuii, and perhaps the most brilliant batsman of his time. His magnificent eye and superb footwork gave bim unchallenged supremacr at the crease. When the. word was passed that 'Macartney is at the wicket the world behind the ropes sat up to enjoy itself. Miracles always happened. He leaves behind, not only a host of scattered stumps and flashing centuries but a lesson. lne strenest critics forgot his qualms for, under Macartney's spell, the game not only assumed new- life but became an art. The "Evening Standard" says that his bat moved as neatly and quickly as a con- . jurcr's wand. .* ■
