HALSWELL QUARRY EMPLOYEES
TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir, —Please allow me space through the medium of your valuable columns to ask a-few simple questions regarding the employment of labour in the Halswell quarries. As everyone is aware, these quarries are owned by the City Council, and.as there is a Labour Council in power, why is it that local married men cannot get a job there? Why is it that single men with no dependents are given preference over local men with. families? There are good working married men in Halswell today who cannot get a day's work, and yet have time and again tried the quarries, only to be refused by the manager; and yet single men are being put on in preference. Is this not a crying shame? Of course the reason is very obvious to those in the know. Anyone in Halswell could supply the answer. I think it is time the Councillors woke up and stopped this preference to single men scheme. —Yours, etc.. LET THE LITTLE ONES BE FED.
