J. E. FITZGERALD.

*~. — THE SUGGESTED MEMORIAL DISCUSSION BY PILGRIMS' ASSOCIATION. The suggestion that a memorial should be erected to James Edward Fitzgerald, the first superintendent or Canterbury, was again before the Canterbury Pilgrims' Association, the reply of the Cathedral Chapter being before the meeting of the Association held yesterday afternoon. The reply stated that a memorial window to J. E. Fitzgerald and his wife already had been placed' in the Cathedral by members of the fiamily, and the Chapter considered that anything in the shape of a public memorial should be erected in a public P Mr"'J J Thomson said that he did not think that anything further *as necessary seeing that j ono or the avenues had been called after Air Fitzgerald. , , ~ ~ „., Mr H. L. fcowker asked if Mr litzgerald had been connected with the Cathedral. _,., Mr E. R. Webb said that Mr Fitzgerald collected the first subscriptions in England for the Cathedral when he, went Home as Agent for Canterbury The chairman (Mr J. A. Flesher), replying to a question, said that the Association had suggested a brass tablet, or something of that nature in the western porch of, the Cathedral. Mr Bowker suggested that the members of the present Chapter were not aware of what Mr Fitzgerald had done for the Cathedral. Mr Webb said that Mr George Harper was a member of the Chapter. Mr Bowker: He would know. Mr Webb remarked that the window in the Cathedral was a family tribute and not a public memorial. . Mr Bowker suggested that the chairman should have a talk with Mr Harper on the subject. Mr Thomson said that he had talked with Mr Harper, who had referred to the window, and who did not think anything further was necessary. He moved: "That a copy of the reply from the Chapter be sent to Mrs Vogel." Mr Webb said that Mrs Vogel, nee Levin, was a niece of Mr Fitzgerald's and on behalf of the family had contributed £6OO to the Cathedral Completion Fund. Mr A. Selwyn Bruce asked if that had been mentioned in the letter to the Chapter, The chairman said that the matter came before the Association in April last when the secretary reported that Mrs Vogel had sc£n him on the subject of the Chapter making greater recognition of the part her uncle had played in the foundation of the province of Canterbury. Mrs Vogel, according to the secretary's report as minuted, suggested that the Dean and Chapter should be approached and asked if they could see their .way to put up a brass plate acknowledging a donation of £6OO given by Mrs Vogel towards the fund for the completion of the Cathedral. " Mr Thomson's motion was agreed to, and it was also decided that the chairman should have a talk with Mr George Harper on the subject.
