AUCKLAND, July 25. "Accused has been in hospital for eight or ten months and I will offer no evidence," said Chief-Detective Cummings in the Police Court, when Joseph James Ritchie, aged 50, was charged with stealing on November 14th, 192*. the sum of £34 7s, of which he came into possassion as clerk of the Waihi Borough Council. The Chief- detective added that accused's condition was serious. • • The Magistrate (Mr McKean) dismissed the charge for want of prosecution.
