Goodenough chairman, took a favourable view of the trade outlook. He said: With common sense on both sides m induitry there should be new opportunities for development in the export trade, particularly with the Dominions and colonies, while with a favourable trade balance and the close co-operation or the Bank of England and reserve banKs abroad, especially in the British Dominions. we should certainly be able to improve the gold position without any material alteration of the old system. Thus we could not only develop the visible and invisible exports, but build up the solidarity of the Empire." PERMANENT INVESTMENT. PROFITS FOR YEAR. The annual report of the Permanent Investment and Loan Association of Canterbury stated that the profit for the year amounted to £6957 14s 2d, as compared with £6555 0s 9d last year. After paying the usual dividend at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum, and a special ' bonus of Is per share with the December dividend, there remained at credit of proht and loss account (including £1750 16s 4d brought forward from last year) £2208 10s 6d. From this amount £IOOO had been transferred to reserve account, leaving £I2OB 10s 6d to be carried forward. The directors retiring by rotation were Messrs J. J. Thomson and H. A. Knight, both of whom, being eligible, had given notice of their intention iio seek re-election.

The first shipment of the new seasou's apples for iiritain will leave Wellington early next month and will be followed by other consignments at close intervals. The total numbor of cases booked to bo shipped up to March 13th is 172,000.
