ASHBURTON.

PERSONAL. Mr B. B. Neilson, of the Pensions Department, Timaru, visited Ashburton yesterday, and heard several applications for the old age pension. Judgment by Default. There was only a short sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Ashburton yesterday, there being no occasion for a visit from the Magistrate. Before Messrs B. Galbraith and G. W. Andrews, J.P.'s, Naylor Wilson received judgment by default from Albert Johns for the sum of £5 15s lid with costs £1 14s 6d. loyal Ashburton Lodge. The Loyal Ashburton Lodge, 1.0.0. F. M.U., met on Thursday evening, when the N.G., Bro. J. Dickinson, presided. One candidate was initiated into the order, one proposal for membership was received, and one candidate was elected by ballot. The District Secretary notified that the, district, annual conference was set down for March 12th, and that a Past Grands' Lodge, for the purpose of conferring the Purple Degree, would be held on February sth. Sick-pay amounting to £l7 was passed for payment in favour of eleven members. Borough Bates. The Borough Council.has been successful in collecting a large proportion of its rates for the 1926-27 year and there now remains only £570 4s Id which will incur the ten per cent, penalty through not being.paid by January 20th. The total .rate struck was £10,939 6s 6d, and of this amount £10,369, 2s 5d was collected up to Thursday evening. Last year the total rate struck was £.10,429 3s 2d and £10,024 0s 9d was collected up to January 20th, 1926, leaving £405 2s 5d which incurred the penalty. Swimming. At a meeting of the Executive of the Ashburton Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, the Chairman (Mr E. W. G. Coker) pre-, sided. Advice was received from the New Zealand Council that the Australian lady swimmers, Missc" Boh"- 1 — -mul Cauldwell, were due to visit Ashburton ■on Tuesday,. February loth. The chairman 'said that if it were proposed to accept' that date for the visit of tl swimmers,,the dates for the annual carnivals of the East Ashburton and Ashburton Clubs would have to be altered. . • The date was accepted and the Ashburton Club's carnival was set down for .February Bth, and that the East Ashburton Club for February 23rd. The chairman and secretary were deputed to interview.the Mayor with the view to a nging a civic reception for the Australian lady swimmers and to obtain permission to use the Borough School baths for the carnival. METHVEN. ( A pleasant evening was spent recently in the Anglican Hall, Methven, when the many friends of Mr and Mrs Bay Grubb tendered them a welcome home after their wedding trip. The evening was spent in dancing, while a number of vocal ar.d elocutionary items were contributed. Songs were sung by Mesdamea J. F. Stone and G. Anderson and Miss Duff and Mr P. Jenkins, while Mr R. Gerring contributed a recitation. Miss Brown (Sydney) acted as accompanist. Music for the dancing was 'supplied by Mr Len Allred and Mr Alex. Lawrence was M.C. During the evening Mr M. A. Stone, on behalf of the many friends of Mr and Mrs Grubb, handed to them a handsome Doulton tea service as a I small token of the esteem in which they were held. Mr Grubb, who was greeted with musical honours, suitably responded. STAVELEY. 3£rs D. E. Sawers returned on Wednesday from a holiday spent in the south. . There have been some fine hot summer days during the week. Nor'-weat-era have made some days oppressive and have brought the crops nearer maturity. Hay-making is at present occupying the attention of farmers, and some good . paddocks have been saved. The monthly meeting of directors of the Staveley Dairy Factory was held on Monday evening. The pay-out, as agreed upon by the Canterbury Associated Factories, was fixed at Is, Is Id, and Is 2d. The pay-out for cheese was fixed at Is 4d. It was reported that the new dairy regulations will come into force after the end of next month. It was reported that the produce of the factory was again grading very well this season, the butter and cheese going through the stores grading superfine, while on one occasion the butter was graded at the exceptionally high figure of 94J. The committee of the Hall Society met on Wednesday evening. There were present: Messrs G. L. Bufton (chairman), C. Cornick (secretary), D. A. Syme, and W. Eagle. It was decided to begin euchre evenings again, the_first evening to be given on February sth.
