NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beaches this morning at 7.4 o'clock, and in the river at 8.20 o'clock, and to-morrow at 7.51 a.m. and 9.16 a.m. respectively. Central Gala. The borough's annual festival is being held to-day, and the two secretaries, Messrs Hardie and Sugden, report that everything is in readiness for the carrying out to a successful issue of numerous items and attractions set out in the committee's official programme. The offerings for the day include the gala queen competition in which upwards of 50 girls whose ages range from C to 10 years are taking part. Then there are hosts of races with good prizes attnehed for children of all ages. There are also side-shows galore. The gala will be officially opened at 2.30 p.m. by the Mayor, Mr J. Gamble, and Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., while Mrs Sullivan will also be present. Daring the afternoon and evening the Christchurch Municipal Band will provide a programme of lively music. At 8.45 p.m. the local Fire Brigade, assisted by visiting firemen, will form together with the Band, in procession, starting from Nelson street, and march to the pier, where at D o'clock there will be a grand fireworks display given under the supervision of Mr Biekerton. Great interest Is being taken in this year'B function, both locally and from outside, and given fine weather its success is assured.

Borough Picnic. A special meeting of the committees of the Central, South, and North schools, and representatives of the Borough Council employees was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday. Present: The chairman, Mr H. A. Glasson, Mesdames Bollamy, Moses, Messrs Dunkley, Leaver, Close, Wilson, Mr Pearson (headmaster of tho Central School), and the secretary, Mr T. Eobins. It was .decided after considerable discussion that Messrs Pearson and Kobins should make the necessary arrangements with the authorities at Motukarara for the annual borough picnic to be held on the Domain at that place on Wednesday, February 2nd. It was agreed that the picnickers should leave the borough per special trams in the morning. It was, decided that the employees' committee of the Council should arrange all matters in connexion with the adult sports programme, leaving tho other part of the programme . of sports in the hands of the School Committee, assisted by the headmaster, Mr Pearson. The,chairman reported that the proprietors of the Premier Picture Theatre here were giving a benefit performance in aid of the picnic funds on the Bth and 9th of February. Mrs Moses reported that as a result of a euchre party held at the residence of Mrs Cockle, £1 18s 3d had been raised in aid of the funds. It was decided to hold a progressive euchre tourney in the school rooms in aid of the picnic funds. Opening of New Hall. The hall recently erected on Seaview road for the Salvation Army, is to be opened this afternoon at 3 p.m., by Lieut.-Colonel Gunn, assisted by Brigadier Wallace 1 , D.H.Q., and the Linwood Silver Band. \ Garden Party. 1 A garden party is being held at "Glenrowan," Howe Btreet, the residence of Mrs March, on Wednesday, in aid of the funds of the local branch of the British Seamen's Guild. Band Concert. The Woolston Band are giving a musical programme from the Esplanade rotunda to-morrow, at 3 p.m. The Band has obtained permission from the Bdrough Council to tako up a collection in aid of its funds during the course of the afternoon. Council Comments. The work of forming a footpath along Estuary road, from Jellicoe street to Mr Oargeeg's property, is to be proceeded with'as soon as funds permit. The Chairman of works has been authorised to continue the stone sea wall, North' Beach; to such ,extent as the funds available will allow. .'The Central Surf Club have been granted permission to run a side-show in aid of club funds outside the club pavilion. The manual fire engines now stationed at North and South Brighton are to be returned to. the Borough Council yard for overhaul. Tho Council has placed on record its appreciation of the prompt action of all who assisted Fireman Tooley in his recent accident when attending a fire at North Beach, and also that of Dr. W. E. Stevens, for his attention to the injured man and members of the Brigade on previous occasions. The small chemical fire engine is to be offered to \he North Canterbury Hospital Board for sale at £SO. The Medical Officer of Health has requested that the Council assist in the suppression of the rat population, pointing out that a case of plague has recently been reported from Liverpool with which port New Zealand is constantly in touch, and recommending that satisfactory measures be taken by tne Council, such as poisoning, trapping, etc., and that a limited stock of rat Telegraph Department have advised that public call offices will be Established at the corner of Kookwood avenue and to° eoo « s ° "™! and Richmond terrace and Jervois street as early as possible. . Seventeen building permits .were issued during December, having an aggregate value of £3529, for which the Council received fees amounting to *l6 15s, and making a grand-total of per mits issued to date of 83 having an aggregate value of £14,585, aB against 104 issued over the same period in 1920, valued at £17,420.
