William Henry Ashby, aged 72, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a quantity of lc , a l Piping, valued at i'l 2s 6d, the property of Taylors, Ltd. He -was fined 10s, in default two davs' imprisonment. REMANDED. Richard Jennings Cuttlo was remanded to appear at Dunediu on January 25th on a onargo that bo failed to comply villi the term;, of his release upon probation. BY-LAW BREACHES. liiy following vera fioed for having uulighted motorcars at night:—Thomas Capstick, ss; C. H. Chisnall. 10s: Ernest .1. Jackson, 10s; W. Scott, 10s; D. G. L. 'Whitford (two charges), 10s and 20s, A. B. L. Smith, costs only. Stanley Yeatman was fined 10s and costs for having uo lights on his car, and was convicted and discharged for leaving his car unattended.
T. Savillo and Martin Watts were earh fined 10s and costs for cycling at night without lights.
•For not having rear lights attached to their cars, S. Barwald 3ud E. J. C'ooko vero each lined 10s and costs.
The following wero fined for cycling on the footpath:—Alfred H. Buun, 10s: Abort Fmdley, 10s; G. Murphy, 10s; Kathleen Welbniore, 10s; Were 10s; John G. Woodhani, 10s; Daniel Fitzgerald, IO3; Iris AIoU, 10s.
John G. Mackie, jun.. pleaded guilty to .1 charge of cycling on the footpath. •Senior-Sergeant Roach said that defendant had knocked down a small boy who was coming out of a gato. Medical attention had been given the boy, and these expenses had been paid by defendant's father. Jtackie was fined 20s and costs.
John Turner Dauncey, a driver of a motorcycle in Lichfield street, was fined 20s and costs for failing to stop his cycle when signalled to do so.
J. W. Stanley was fined £U and costs for driving over a railway crossing when the lino was not clear. Charles Lorett and John JtcGarry were each fined 5s and costs for u breach of the motor regulations.
FIREWORKS. Leslie Green van charged with letting off fireworks in Oxford terrace at night. Green was fined 5s and costs.
For a similar offeuco committed in front of Ballautyne's on Clirismas Eve, Fred Kisdon was fined 20s and costs. H. Pannell was fined 10s and costs for lighting 11 bonfire without giving notice. John Alexander Fleming was fined 10s and costs for riding a motor-cycle without a license to do so, and 20s and costs for pillion riding in Sea View road, New Brighton. Charles Patterson was lined "0s and costs for abetting pillion riding. H. D. Hughes and V. W. Spinks were each fined 5s and costs for driving motor-vehicles without a license to do so.
For not having a reflecting mirror attached to his motor-lorry, William Fronch was fined 5s and costs.
Albert Goodheart was ordered to pay costs for driving a motor-car with incorrect number plates affixed. For having obscured number plates, E. Smith was fined 5s and costs. DISMISSED. William Henry Booth (Mr G. A. G. Connal) pleaded not guilty to a charge of negligent driving. Police evidence was to the effect that defendant had been driving a motor-car along Lyttelton street towards Liucon road. On reaching tho intersection he drove out in front of an approaching lorry, and in order to avoid it had collided with a tram-car. The information was dismissed. AN OIL. TANK.
Walter Benjamin Glass was charged with dangerous driving in Oxford terrace. Senior-Sergeant Roach said that defendant had been driving an oil tank, weighing 6J tons, along Oxford terrace. There was a motor-car in front, and defendant went to pass it. In doing so he fouled tho tram-track, and it was necessary to back. When reversing ho collided with another motor-car bohind him. "Y'ou have to operate these tanks with tho greatest of care," said the Magistrate, when imposing a fine of £2 and costs. DRIVING CHARGES. For negligent driving, Edward Tomkinson was fined 20s and costs, and Noel Peters £3 and costs. L. ! S. Pilgrim (Mr Murphy) was charged with driving a motor-car in a negligent manner. After hearing the evidence, his Worship said that at would have been more proper to havo charged defendant with a breach of the by-law, and he was prepared to amend the charge. •. Mr Murphy stated that had his client been charged under the by-laws, he would havo pleaded guilty, thus saving witnesses' expenses. " ' . ■ • Pilgrim was fined 10s and costs. No witnesses' expenses were allowed. George M. Torranco (Mr 0.. S. Thomas) pleaded not guilty to charges of speeding' and of dangerous driving. Evidence for the prosecution was- to the effect that defendant had been driving a motor-car along Buckley's road, and had been travelling about 40 miles an hour. A motorcyclist, who was in front of defendant, turned to the right to enter Cemetery road, and was struck by tho car. The cyclißt had signalled his intention of turning, and made a halfturn. After the collision the car had continued for twenty-two yards, finishing with its front wheels in the channel at the side of tho road.
Defendant stated in evidence .that he had been travelling about 20 to 25-miles an hour along Buckley's road. There was a motorcyclist proceeding in front of the car, and defendant accelerated to pass him. Witness's car was fitted with four-wheel brakes, and if he had been travelling at the speed alleged, tho car would have capsized when the brakes .were applied. / Torranco waß fined £7 and costs. CHARGE DISMISSED.
A taxi-driver, Richard Vizer (Mr O. S. Thomas) was charged with dangerous driving. It was alleged that defendant had been driving in Moorhouse avenue, and had collided with a cyclist, who suffered a broken leg. ' After hearing the evidence the Magistrate dismissed the case.
