For a distance of fully four chains from the mouth of the river the fins and tails of millions of kahuwai could be seen by campers. A net was stretched across the river, and the pressure of fish against it forced those holding it some distance downstream before it could be landed with its living freight, which amounted to about three barrow-loads, of kahuwaiKahuwai are excellent sporting fish, und many visitors to' the beach are engaged in fishing for them with the rod and line.
