WAIMAIRI COUNTY.
MEETING OF COUNCiL,
The monthly meeting of the Waiuiain County Council was held last night. Those attending were:—Messrs H. Paterson (chairman), B. W. Hawke, G. Shipley, H. Kitson, W. P. Spencer, J. Oleland, T. 0. Newnham, and G. T. Mulcock. On the recommendation of tho Works Committee, Mr F. W. Brightling was granted a clearance in regard to roads in Fendalton, where he recently laid Bewer mains. .. The Electricity Committee reported that the application of the Burwood .Residents Association for an additional lamp had been declined. * The City Council had advised that clauses in the county selling rates would be amended to provide necessary additional space at Mcßratney'soroad sub-station for the county's equipment. It had been decided to advise Mr H. Vale, a consumer, that the Council would extend mains to his gate, provided he contributed half the cost (£18). It had been resolved to accept Messrs Wedderspoon's tender of £3O 2s 6d for oil switches, and the same firm's tender for high tension cable. The line of steel poles erected in Vague's road had been inspected, and approved. The report was adopted. The county foreman reported that patching had been done on various roads In the Fendalton Biding. Hanson's road had been scarified and regraded, and the spoil had been used to cover the rubbish dump. Tho Styx river had been cleaned out from Sawyer's Arms road to Harewood/road; and also the part from Buckley's boundary to Gardener's road. Schmack's creek had been cleaned, but the part in Mr Reynold's _ property was In a bad state, thereby making it impossible to clean the upper reaches efficiently. The carting of spoil from the sides of the roads in the Belfast township had been completed, and the sides of the roads had been regraded and rolled. The grading* from Factory and North roads were being deposited in the ditch opposite Guthrie's road, preparatory to forming a footpath. The kerb and channel on the south side of Vague's road had been completed, and the west sido of Northcoto road was nearing completion. Sawyer's Arms road and Meadow street had been scanned and regraded, and the footpaths in Meadow street were being re-graded. The report was adopted. The Electrical Engineer reported that thirty-eight street lamps had been replaced in various parts of the district. It was recommended t*at several additional lamps be erected. Two sub-stations had been erected to replace existing pole stations. Steel poles had be'en erected in Vague's road and Hanson's lane. Several of the complaints made by the Public Works Department had been rectified. The engineer outlined the work done in connexion with the 6600 volt change over. The report was adopted. It was decided to take a tally of the traffic on North and Marshland roads for one The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr J. K. Archer) wrote stating that a conference of representatives of local bodies would take place on February 2nd to discuss the question of unemployment. It was decided that Mr Newnham represent tho Council at the meeting.
