Yesterday morning a five-soater car. driven bv Mr M. Early ,when turning out of Charles street into Cookson street, Kaiapoi, collided with tho ornamental drinking fountain outside tho Kaiapoi Post Office. The drinking fountain was completely wrecked and damage was done to the left mudguard, lamp, radiator, and front axle of the car. occupants of the ear fortunately escaped injury. 'The driver attributes tne accident to the steering gear becoming jammed. AKAROA. The final meeting of the Gala executive was held on Tuesday night, and in the absence of the chairman, Mr F. R. Davis,, the ch-ir was taken by the Mayor, Mr G. ..rmstrong. The various clubs 'were represented by an attendance of 16 members. The balancesheet, which was adopted, showed that a total amount of £641 had been collected, and when all expenses uuu been paid there would be a sum of £572 to divide- between the participating clubs. It was decided to pay each club £7O, and hold over the balance, £l2, for a fortnight, in case there were any outstanding accounts unpaid. The eight clubs, which.will benefit are: Bowling, Boating, Lawn Tennis, Domain Tennis, Football, Croquet, Golf, and the Advancement Association. The chairman eulogised the services of the two secretaries, Messrs T. H. Frazer and G. Davidson, for the very able manner fri which they had/conducted their pertion of the Queen contest and Gala, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to them by the meeting.. A suggestion was put forward that a sum of money should be voted towards the purchase of a new cricket outfit: for the High School boys. The meeting was of the. opiniori that it could" not grant, funds outside;j the specific object for.which the money had been raised, and it was decided that the executive should run a dance towards the end. of the - month, and I devote the proceeds to; the: purchase, of the requirements of the schoolboys. Before the close of the meeting, a motion of thanks was passed to the Mayor.' for the. very active, interest ho. had taken throughout the Gala.' Association wrote acknowledging receipt of. ' a cheque for £lO towards defraying the cost of transport of the boats on New Year's, Day. The secretary, Mr W.. Jacobson, submitted an- interim bal-ance-sheet, which showed that the' receipts were £ 16s sd, and expenditure £llO.. 13s Bd,..leaving a credit of £1!) 2s 9d, which was considered most satisfactory. A recommendation to the incoming committee was nassed, that the youths' race for the Thicker ■Shield be rowed in single sculler boats in the future, and aho that Rowing Association be notified to that effect so..that the., various c'uhs.could -procure, single-scullers, if necessary. A meeting of the Akaroa Football Club as held on Wednesday night. Those present were:—Messrs F. G. Armstrong, club captain, in the chair; W. H. Priest, W. M. Buddie, T.'-E. McKehzie, J. Manson, and J. G. and H. J. Le Lievre. Owing to the departure from the district of Mr J; Ferguson, who is secretary and treasurer, Messrs McKenzie arid Priest were appointed to act until the » ual meeting in March. The trustees .iere empowered to place the £7O received from the Gala committee in the Savings Bank. Accounts amounting to £l9 10s were passed for payment, and it was decided to supply several car owners with petrol, who had assisted with the transport of players during the past season. The resignation of Mr W. M. Buddie, who is shortly leaving the district, was accepted with regret. A recommendation to the annual meeting was carried, suggesting an earlier etart with matches than in previous years.

So far there has been. plenty of labour offering, but jf the weather continues as at present, it will only be a matter of a week before all the seed will need to be down. There are some first-class crops, and,-fortunately, the tares are not up hieh enough'to'i'nterfere with the seed. All the Bays report that there is not much foreign matter in the seed this year. TAI TAPU. The annual meeting of tho Tai Tapti Librarv Committee was held, when Mr J. Gilmour presided. The secretary read the annual report and balancesheet, which were both satisfactory The former contained an interesting account of the history of the oresent library building,: which had celebrated its fiftieth jubilee. Mr Gilmour reported that the Selection Committee had purchased a number of new books for tho library. It was unanimously decided to make Sir Heaton Rhodes a life member of the library in appreciation of the invaluable services rendered bv him. Through the generosity of fair Heaton Rhodes, the Library Building Fund has been augmented by the sale of daffodil bulbs to the extent of over £IOOO.
