Coates, president of the Greymouth Jockey Club, and Mr IX JEvans, secretary of the Westlaml Pacing Club, left this morning for Wellington, where they will attend the Pacing Conference. Miss A. E. Oliver, South Canterbury, who is spending a holiday on the West Coast, leaves to-morrow for the Glacier?. Mr K. Xelson, formerly foreman of ihai'way works, Greymouth, and now of Dunedin, arrived this afternoon frcm Wellington, on a visit to his son, Mr G Xelson, Barry town. Mr Xelson is accompanied by Mrs Nelson. Mr Jack Gandell, a former member of the Greymouth Post Office staff, died I this morning at Xorthlands, Wellington, after a long illness. Mr Gandell, I who leaves a wife and two children, J was the fourth son of Mrs E. Gandell, j formerly of Greymouth, and now resi- ! dent in Christchurch. He saw service iin the Great War and moved from i Greymouth to Wellington some live years ago, being an invalid practically | the whole time till his death. Hawthorne, who acted as West Coast representative for Messrs Ross and Glendining during the absence of Mr R. Smith, accompanied by Mrs Hawthorne and family, left this mornfor Wellington. Mr and Mrs T. Jones, who have been spending a holiday in Canterbury, returned this afternoon. Mr L. McGlashan left to-day for Wellington. Miss N. McCallum, who has been spending a holiday in Greymouth, returned to-day to Dunedin. Mr Felix Gembitsky, of the Greymouth Railway stationmaster's office, and Mrs Gembitsky, left this morning on a holiday trip to Wellington. Among the outward passengers by today's express were: Mcsdames J. Ward, R. Mcllroy, J. R. McNaughton, Misses M. Hooley, E. J. Debenham, Messrs R. Mcllroy, 11. Ward, and W. S. Butcher. The Rev. 11. 11. Burton (Presbyterian Foreign Mission Branch) and Mrs Burton, who have been spending a holiday in the Buller Gorge, returned this morning to Dunedin.
Bowling. The Linwood bowling team played a rotum two-rink match against the Greymouth Club this morning. Following yesterday's rain the green was in excellent condition, each of the rinks playing a number of interesting heads. The following were the scores, the Linwood rinks in each case being mentioned first: — Chivers, Muirson, Johns, Bamsay (s) 11, Moss, J. Kyle, L. Mercer, Whibley (s) 30; Taylor, Mazey, Papps, Sprosen (s) 13, Brislano, F. H. Kilgour, Steer, McKay 30. At the conclusion of the games, Messrs Sprosen and J. Allen, president and secretary respectively, of the Linwood Club, thanked the members of the local Clnb for the hospitality extended to them during their stay in Greymouth. Mr W. Cochrane, president, replied on behalf of the Greymouth Club. Express Passenger Traffic. The number of passengers by this morning's outward express was 240. The inward express to-day brought in 220 passengers to the Coast. The Weather. Following yesterday's rain the weather cleared during the night and the sun shone from a cloudless sky throughout the day. Municipal Statistics. The total value of building permits issued by the Greymouth Borough Council for the month of December was £1538. During the last month the following stock was dealt with at the Greymouth Municipal abattoir: Three cows, 146 bullocks, 538 sheep, 426 lambs, 21 pigs, and 24 calves. The total fees collected for the month amounted to aim S The Greymouth Municipal Librarian's report for the yea.r ended December 31st, 1926, states that 368 subscnbeVtickets were issued, 253 new book placed on the shelves, and 20,798 books handed out to subscribers. Subscripts amounted to £l4l 10s, and the sum of £4l 7s Dd was received m fines, etc., making a total of £lB2 17s 9d. Found Dead. Samuel Quinn, an old age pensioner, wSund dead in his hut last evening It Hukerere, near lkamatua. Quinn, wnfwas 7years of age, was unmarried Death was due to natural causes. His brother resides at Reefton. Magistrate's Court. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presided today at a fitting of the Hokitika Magistrate's Court. Charges or being unlawfully on licensed P">™» To" dealt with as follows :-Anoffende r (Occidental Hotel) was ordered to pay costs 7s; two offenders (Club Hotel), one was fined SOs and costs 7s, and the other 40s and 7s costs; two offenders (Dun edin Hotel), one was ordered to pa> costs 7s, and the other was fined 20s and coste 7s; three offenders (Helvetia Hotel, Goldsborough), each ordered to pay costs, two of 7s and one of 18s. William M. Routhan, licensee of the Helvetia Hotel, Goldsborough, pleaded cuilty to opening for the sale of uquor and selling liquor on Christmas Day. He was fined 20s and costs ,s on one charge, the other being withdrawn. Charged with procuring liquor cluiinS the currency of prohibition orders, A. C. Ellis, F: Low, and P. Souter were each fined os, with costs 7s. Edwin Sherriff, licensee of the Three Mile Hotel, was charged with exposing liquor for sale and selling during prohibited hours. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate dismissed the charge. Convictions for being on the premises illegally were made against five persons. Three were ordered to pay 9s each costs, and two 7s each, one other charge being adjourned. Claud Robertson pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a hat, valued at £-t 9s 6d. from Ronald Ross. After hearing the evidence bis Worship fined Robertson £5 and costs £l. in default fourteen days in the Greymouth prison.
