FRAUD CHARGES.

EXHIBITION MACHINERY. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN BEFORE COURT. [THE* PBESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, January 19. George Thomson Swann, who has been brought from South Australia, appeared before Mr J. It. Bartholomew, S.M., in the City Police Court this morning. He was charged with on March 13th, 1924, obtaining from Margaret Gibson with intent to defraud the sum of £IBO by falsely representing that he was supplying the Exhibition Company with machinery and that by 'investing £IBO with him she would participate in the profits he said he was making. Mr A. C. Hanlon appeared for the accused. Chief-Detective Cameron asked for a remand till January 28th. 31r Hanlon agreed to that, at the same time applying for bail, which had been allowed the 1 accused in Australia.

The Chief-Detective said ho had no objection to bail. The accused had just been extradited from South Australia on the present and other charges, and .the bail should be fairlj substantial. The Magistrate: Is it a case of a mau clearing out of the country with a charge hanging over him? Chief-Detective Cameron replied that the charges were not laid till after the man had left the country. Mr Hanlon: He went away on a Union Company ship under his own name and without secrecy. '"I see the offence was committed over two years ago," observed the Magistrate. Chief-Detective Cameron: The complainants did not find out that they had been tricked till after the accused had left the country. In response to a query by the Magistrate he said that there wou!d_ be half a dozen charges in all, involving some £2OOO. , „ "It is a case for substantial bail, said his Worship. "The remand asked for will be granted, and bail of £SOO will be allowed, with two sureties of £250, and a condition will be that the accused report daily to the police. '
