CABLE ABSdCUTTOJT;) * LONDON, January 18. At the wool sales there was an excellent selection of greasy combing merinos, a fairly representative lot of scoureds, while the bulk of the crossbrods were medium and lower sorts. Tboro was a large attendance and good competition. Germany was the principal operator, and good greasy inerinos met strong Continental competition. Prices were from par to 5 per cent, above December closing rates. Ordinary average Borts and scoureds were unchanged. Crossbreds met ,a strong Continental and Yorkshire demand, and sold at par to 5 per cent, advance. The New Zealand "Tarata" sold at 17Jd highest and 15Jd average.

Dalgcty and Company, Ltd., have received the following cabled advice from London: —■ Wool sales opened with a large attendance of buyers, and competition was animated. Good selection of wools, Fronch, German, and Belgian buyers operating actively, the Home trade buying any suitable lots. As compared with the closing rates of last series, finer merino Id higher, other descriptions of merino-par to Id higher, fine crossbred par to Id higher, medium and coarse crossbred and slips unchanged. For pieces there is good demand from the Continent.

The National Mortgage and Agency Co. of N.Z., Ltd., has received the following cable from their London office:—The auctions opened here with a large attendance of buyers,, and keen competition.. Compared with the closing rates of last sales, we quote:—Greasy merino, best, 14 dearer; greasy merino, average, Id dearer; halfbreds, 50-56's, Id dearer; crossbreds, 48-50's, }d dearer; crossbreds, 46-48's, no change; crossbreds, 44-46's, no change; crossbreds, 40-44's, ao change; crossbreds, 36-40's, no change. Competition is active for finer grades, but lower grades are irregular. Slipe wools are selling better. Prices generally showed little change. ' • The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. has received the following cabled advice from London:—There was a good attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental buyers being active, and prices, as compared with the close of preceding series, ruled par to 5 per cent, higher for merino wool, and ruled in sellers' favour for greasy and scoured crossbred, with a better market for slipe crossbred. The opening "catalogues were representative. GOLD. I - . _ ~ . . LONDON. January 18. bold is quoted at 84s lOd per fine oz, as against 8U Hid on January 13U.
